Headed to Costa Rica next month and plan to rent a car. Any recommendations for companies to use or stay away from? Have booked cars all over the US, but not in CR. Any assistance would be helpful. Thanks

I've rented with Adobe before and it was fine. I highly recommend getting the overpriced supplemental insurance so there aren't any issues when you return it.

I may be misremembering, but I think it's required, regardless of any insurance you already have from a Cc or elsewhere.

Don't rent the cheapest tin can option. A sewing machine with 4 wheels getting blown off mountain roads by fancy range rovers won't win you any points with your spouse.

This. At the time I purchased it I was like wtf did I just pay all that money for. After driving in the mountains in a moonsoon I barely ran into the back of a local and had very little damage(paid the local $300 cash to forget about it, he did ) to our rental. Between the locals on those mopeds and some of the roads are traitorous especially during rainy season. Loved our trip but the chances of getting in some type of accident or damaging a rental in costa rica are pretty high I would think. We turned in the rental with a slight bulge in the bumper and have never heard back so I guess the extra insurance took care of it.

If you have a credit card that provides coverage, you can decline the extra insurance. The rental folks are going to push back, but can be done. Prior to leaving, contact your credit card and have them send you proof of rental coverage, with your name and last 4 of your acct number listed. Make sure this card is used to pay for the reservation, and any other fees associated with the rental.
Rented cars in CR maybe 5 times, as well as about 5 times in MX over the past 4 years. Sometimes they will put a ridiculously high charge on the card and refund when you return - like $20K. Make sure you have room on the card.

The cost of the insurance often exceeds the rental charge, let your CC company battle out the issues should they arise.

The resort we stayed at had a rental car representative in the lobby.
