Cades Cove is a very popular destination for many people on this board so I wanted to get the word out now about its closure for repaving.

Starting Sept 7 and going through Sept 27 the loop road will remain closed for repaving project. The store campground and riding stables will be open but there will be work on those roads from time to time as well.

Bad timing I agree but there really is no good time for us to do these projects with visitation at an all time high.

That actually coincides with my planned hike thru SMNP from Fontana so perhaps it works in my favor

Hate to hear that. Labor Day weekend is some pretty high travel for that area.

Looks like they are starting the day after labor day with plans to be done prior to the fall colors.

Every tourist child on that road is looking for a bear. It would be hilarious to have a bear suit, hide behind a tree, and peek around it just as a car passes.

Someone might shoot you before the day was over, but you'd get some laughs before that.

Good to know. I grew up every summer making a week long camping trip at Cades Cove. On year we all biked 100+ miles on the Loop. Hit it every afternoon and a couple of the mornings when its for bikes only. Nice to know its getting taken care of

The loop road gets resurfaced every 10 years or so. It had some fairly substantial drop offs on the sides we noticed this fall when we camped there. Peak foliage change is mid October so I guess they are trying to get it finished in time for all that traffic coming through

Sounds like a great time to stay at that CG, then hike Cade's Cove in perfect solitude.
