What are you looking for? How much travel? Carry on or checked? Price range?

For my travel I use the following:

I fly 50,000 miles a year.

I don't travel much, maybe 2-3 trips a year max. Basically just need something larger I can check. Definitely want a spinner

Look into the one I showed you. They do sell them at target and walmart, but I bought them on amazon for sub $100. Swissgear also has a lifetime warranty.

Check out awaytravel.com. They are durable and have usb chargers built in. You’d be amazed how useful that will be.

I don't like hardshells. You see plenty of cracked ones.
Softsided is what I use, even for my (very rarely) checked bags. I only check on the way home if I've bought liquid souvenirs. Never yet had a bottle break, though I usually wrap in plastic, sometimes bubble wrap, & pad w/clothes.

I am old enough to appreciate very lightweight luggage. I don't want a bag that weighs 10 lbs before I've put anything into it.

I roll with Tumi Tegra Lite. Hard shell, but has the little kungfu railing things around it that prevent too many direct hits to the shell. But, that shell seems pretty damn tough.

I'm rough as hell on my carry ons, and these have held up very, very well.

If you live in the BR area, check out Pearson's on Old Jefferson...

Not sure your budget, but Tumi is the first and last place I look. Everything I’ve purchased has held up

Travelpro is great. While I love spinners for carry-ons, I don't like them as checked baggage because it's just one more thing the airlines can frick up. If you lose one of those wheels to a shitty baggage handler, you're screwed. I still like the two-wheeled checked bags.

I have a closet full of Samsonite. Places like Macy's put it on sale all the time. I don't buy the super expensive designer stuff because the airlines tear it up.

The battery must be removed, so it is pretty much useless.

Hardcovers are crap, will break.

I’m a big Briggs and Riley guy. Rapps in Metairie by the lakeside mall carries all high end luggage.

Make sure to check the luggage sections at Kohls, Marshalls,
Ross, Burlington, etc. We got 2 full sets of spinners for way cheaper than retail and both sets have held up great for dozens of flights so far. Both sets are nesting sets so they make storage great too. Mine is a Samsonite set and hers is some designer series. One thing on spinners, do you research on the different types. Not all are make equally.

Other spinner cons are that they're far easier to break, can make cheaper bags get out of balance (some of the Travelpros have to be packed correctly or they'll fall over) and are problematic when you're moving over different terrain (cobblestone is the most common complaint).

They're great at skating through terminals and moving sideways, though.

I disagree that hardcovers are crap. I've had a Samsonite carry-on hardcover for over two years now and I fly 35-40 round trips a year and all I have are a few scratches on it. I'm pretty rough on my luggage. I do agree the cheap off-brand ones are crap, but if you go with a good reputable company, you shouldn't have any problems.

As for the OP's question, if you only fly a few times a year, I wouldn't spend more than $125-150 on luggage. You can find plenty of good quality luggage in that price range. I would say to make sure you read the reviews before you buy and make sure you have good quality wheels.

I was anti hardcovers until I actually got one. I have the samsonite carry on and I'm liking it.
