Surprised the Bostonians haven't beat you in the street Marky Mark style.

Probably a touristy spot like Union Oyster House.

I've seen them on a few different lists.

The question I have is this: Where do I go in Boston for the best New England clam chowder?

I got some from Row 34 a few years ago. Thought it was really good, and I would typically agree with abita. It’s usually bland goop, but this one had a nice smoke flavor from the bacon.

If Row 34 has it, that’s where I’d recommend trying it. That’s one of my favorite spots.

But I quote Kristen Bell from The Good Place when it comes to clam chowder:

“it's basically a savory latte with bugs in it.”

Row 34 is a great restaurant. That 42$ is pretty heavy for a lobster roll though

I'm not a lobster fan. My wife, on the other hand, loves lobster rolls. She might pay that. For $42, I want some beef.

$42 is outrageous for a lobster roll. They are expensive already but that’s higher than anywhere else I’ve seen.

I paid anywhere from 28 to 36..I.. although I now think they are overrated, best one I had was some hole in the wall a tour guide recommended that used a seasoned garlic butter

I paid it only because I'd seen from another diner that it was a lot of lobster and I'd had enough Halibut in the previous 3 days to last until winter. But it wasn't worth 42$. Should have just ordered the Seafood Tower

Abita and all who have been lately, has anyone done a whale watching tour? I leave two weeks from today and an concerned about sea sickness. Also am staying right by Boston Common. What train would I take to Fenway? Thanks in advance

Whale watching: if you’re prone to sea sickness, don’t do it. No issues getting out there but once they get to where the whales are located the boat can move up and down a little bit. I’ve done it and not had any issues but if you’re sensitive to motion sickness it’s a factor.

Train to Fenway: you will take the T using the green line. From the Common it will likely be park street, so take the green Line from Park to Kenmore (gives you more options of trains to take vs. getting off at Fenway)

Couldn’t be easier. No changing trains.

I just did the whale watching, took us about an hour and a half to get to the location but was worth it. Saw between 20-30 humpbacks with a few calves putting on an aerial display.
Sitting inside the boat wasn't bad as I've gotten sea sick on other boat tours and didn't take anything for this one. I did stand outside and do some sight seeing and had to take my hat off because I almost lost it due to the wind. It got pretty chilly on the boat out in the water.

Jumping in here:
Abita, the wife and I are looking to fly into Boston Labor day weekend, a Thursday to Monday.

We want to to do the touristy stuff, Freedom Trail,
Local food and drink. What's your recommendations for the area to book a hotel in? We don't want to get a rental car.

Thank you in advance!!

I was located at a place called Harborside Inn, I was right across from the harbor, a few blocks from old state house, a block from Fanieul Hall, and about a 5 minute walk from little Italy section.

You definitely don’t want to rent a car in Boston, so that’s a good call. The T is your friend, and if not using Uber is faster and usually cheaper than navigating the crazy streets and paying for parking.

Certainly budget is a factor when picking a hotel, but if you have the means then staying right off the Common in the Ritz, Four Seasons, or Park Plaza is ideal. But you can also look into the Longwharf Marriott or somewhere in the Back Bay like the Fairmont Copley.

Abita! Two quick questions! The family and I come to Boston on Friday
Question 1: is it possible to walk from the aquarium to Row 34 restaurant?
Question 2: can you catch the T from the Commons to Harvard?
Thanks so much! I’ll buy you a Trillium while I’m town for your troubles!
BTW, is Trillium better than Sam Adams?

Welcome, Doom family! (Edit: Family of Doom? Yeah, Family of Doom sounds way more badass so let’s go with that)

Yes, it’s certainly walkable. Probably 20-30 minute walk but it’s an incredibly easy one. Just go straight down Atlantic and take a left onto Seaport Blvd, then a right on Thompson Place and you’re there.

Question 2: can you catch the T from the Commons to Harvard?

Definitely. Get on at Park Street and take the red line toward Alewife. Harvard is along that line.

It’s not even close. Sam Adams isn’t very good and Trillium is one of the best breweries I’ve ever been to. Topped only by Treehouse in my experience.

Thanks Abita! I owe you! Should you show up to Row34 around 430 Saturday. I’ll be there with a beautiful wife (no pics) and two well behaved kids. I’ll buy you s beer or two. If not I’ll drink a Trillium in your honor!

Extremely kind of you and not necessary! As much as I would love to take you up on the offer I’ll be at a wedding in the South End.

Just wanted to check in and say thank you to everyone for their help. When I floated the idea of going to Boston for vacation my wife and kids said “why”? They now agree that this is the best trip they have ever been on.
I took notes with what you guys suggested and it helped immensely.
BTW, Abita, you were right. Trillium is far superior to Sam Adams.
