Bump. Abita Fan and those knowledgeable about Boston. Coming in late July with the family. Torn between staying in Back Bay and by Faneuil Hall. Which do you guys recommend? Will do Freedom Trail, Whale Watching, and Red Sox while in town.

I’d stay here. Back Bay is great and you can take the train easily but Faneuil Hall is probably more centrally located to stuff you’ll want to do.

You’re my baw, but I can’t disagree with you more. With all due respect. Please don’t stay at Faneuil hall. It’s the most touristy part of Boston.

Ok. Appreciate the quick responses. My concern is that it looks like the T is under construction which would make it difficult to get from Back Bay to the Aquarium. Also, is Back Bay walkable to Boston Common? I’ve never been before so are depending on you baws bigly.

Plans for our August trip are really lining up nice. We decided to take the ferry over to P-Town and spend one night on The Cape. We're going to take the 5:30 ferry over one evening and the next day we rented an old 1960ish land cruiser we plan to take out to some of the beaches and sand dunes, do some shopping, eat, etc. before heading back to Boston after dinner that evening.

First, yes the back bay is definitely a walkable distance to the Common. 10-15 minutes depending on where in Back Bay. Frankly most of the city is walkable. With that in mind I highly encourage that you don’t rent a car.

The T is under construction but primarily the green line and more in Somerville/Cambridge. It’s still readily accessible and you won’t experience delays. The T is your friend. Use it.

That sounds like a great plan. Hope you have some nice weather while you’re in P-Town!

One piece of advice for the ferry would be to get there early enough so you can grab a great seat up top and get some great views. Bring a jacket even in August as it can get chilly with the wind.

Thanks Abita! I’d offer to buy you a pint but I’ll have my kids in tow. And you really don’t want that. Mind if I hit you up for any more questions?

A kind offer but no beer payment needed. Always happy to help guide folks coming to town.

Ask away.

You’d certainly know better than me. I usually stay Back Bay when I’m paying and on the water when someone else is. Was thinking Faneuil Hall would be more centrally located with easier access to different tourist spots. So more touristy I will admit!

Strongly recommend the Freedom trail walk. Fenway will NOT disappoint.

Also catch a beer in the bar that is behind the Green Monster in Fenway. Get there early and you can grab a seat and watch batting practice through the screen before they lower the barrier.

You’re right it’s more centrally located. It’s probably just more of a personal thing for me - I hate going by Faneuil Hall.

Hey Abita, my family of 4 is coming to Boston at the end of July and one of the important things we want to do is the Freedom Trail. I was wondering if you recommend we start at the Boston Commons and once we get to Faneuil Hall to catch the ferry to see the USS Constitution and the Bunker Hill Monument and then either ferry back or return back over the Charles River Bridge to the freedom trail stops in the North End where we will have lunch. I thought the ferry will give us a different view of the city and save some walking for my kids if its a hot day.

Even if you have to walk it over multiple days, Id walk it all over taking the ferry.

Any specific recommendations?

Mama Maria for north end dinner unless you’re ok standing in line and waiting on a table at Giacomo’s (they don’t take reservations).

If you’re only hitting one brewery it has to be Trillium, but for ambiance the Nightshift Owl’s Nest right on the Charles River is very nice.

Thanks for quick response.

We had a one night visit a few years ago but caught the train for Portland before we got to spend any time in the city. Had a great meal at Trattoria Il Panino.

I see there are several Trilliums any one in particular you recommend?

Luck of the draw that I happened to check the TB at that time. I swear I don’t have Boston alerts set.

As far as which trillium to hit, the best one is their headquarters in Canton, but that’s not ideal for someone visiting. So I’d definitely say go to the one in the Seaport District. Also once you’re there, take a walk down the street (it’s not a short walk so you could also take a very quick Uber) to Harpoon and get a beer and a pretzel.
