Driving in the snow isnt hard but I70 between Golden and Avon aint fun if youre used to winter driving, much less the uninitiated.
The bus driver is experienced in winter conditions. It'll have snow tires on it. And who wants to have a car if you're staying in Vail?

It absolutely can be, and on days when it's bright and sunny in Denver and Boulder. It's called an upslope storm, Gulf moisture is pulled up into the higher elevations and it snows like a sonofabitch up there. Good for the skiing, bad for the driving. I've had to get out and push against the side of the car to keep it from sliding into the concrete barrier dividing the interstate - the road is sloped enough that it's a problem when the road is really slick. People who've flown in a few times and rented a car with no problems really don't know the whole story.
My dad and I used to drive from BR to Keystone every winter for a week long trip, and back in 2007 we hit a horrible storm in Hays, Kansas. It was terrifying on flat land, you literally couldn’t see the centerline or shoulder, and were too scared too pull off the road in fear someone might hit you. They ended up closing down the interstate and we had to spend 2 nights in some middle of nowhere Kansas town.

If you have to get a rental car, make sure it’s 4WD or AWD.
I respectfully disagree with this. Vail is directly on top of I70, it is major interstate the entire way. Do not overpay for a 4wd or awd. As another poster said, driving in snow is fine except mid blizzard. CO maintains their roads just fine.

This is the start of a story that ends with Vail Pass being closed due to an incident.

Ive driven that route many times with 2wd. If it is snowing to any measurable level, the OP would not be driving anyways given his lack of experience in driving as I read his post. So, point being if chain law is in effect, I dont think he would be driving.

I drive that route in 2WD all the time too… in summer.
If we’re making assumptions based on the OP, he’s going to Vail for a week. I doubt he’s worried about a few nickels on the rental. If he has no experience driving in snow what’s the benefit of getting a less capable vehicle.

Ive done it in winter. Many people do it in winter. I dont get all the pushback, whatever. Get the 4wd, not gonna matter to me, I dont waste money when not necessary.
ETA: As I think about this, noone I know has rented a 4wd to make that trip on 70.
Cheers nonetheless. The OP will have a good trip and should take a shuttle.

Right. ok.
I read you as encouraging the OP to just do it with 2wd even with bad conditions.

My dad does it a lot in 2WD so OP will be ok.
