Can anyone pass along suggestions? Looking to book a Euro trip with 1-2 buddies (ages 25-30) for 1-2 weeks in late July / early August. Would like to visit multiple countries, open to all combinations (UK / France / Germany / Italy / Switzerland/etc).

ETA: Rough budget range per person ~$3,000-$4,000 with wiggle room (including flights).

You gonna laugh but I planned a 17 day European trip with a few buddies from my work computer about 10 years ago using nothing but TripAdvisor.

Made a short list of things to do and general itinerary. Then I google searched each idea and pivoted from there if needed.

Highlights were
Munich
Interlaken
Innsbruck
Amsterdam
Prague

We used this. A little pricey but they handled EVERYTHING and did a fantastic job with flow.

You need to set some flight trackers' stat to every major city you are interested in flying into.

Check out Gate1 they have a deal now for this fall and winter for $499 for 6 days in Rome. Not what you are looking for but they may have something else.

Also, goodness do a little planning and come back with some more specific questions.

Just plan it yourself. Europe is easy to get around. Scott’s cheap flights would be a must. 5 places in 10 days may be too rushed fwiw.

You can do a lot for $3000-$4000/person.

Say you get a flight for $700
Hotel or Airbnb for $200/night x 9 nights x 1/3 = $600
Let’s say 4 train rides x $100 ea = $400
That leaves $1300-$2300 for food and tours.

I always say it’s not how many cities you visit, it’s how long your travel times are OP. Don’t go from London to Italy for example. Do something like Amsterdam, Belgium, Paris, Luxembourg, Frankfurt. All within 2 hour or under train rides. This saves you a ton of time and money.

My first suggestion would be to keep your ideas grounded. As cool as it may sound in theory to visit 5 countries in 12 days, it will feel more like a job than a vacation by the time ya'll are six days in.

Since you say 1-2 weeks (which is a very significant range), I'm just gonna split the difference and assume ya'll will be there for 10 days.

With 10 days, I'd keep it to 3 cities tops. Use those cities as basecamps to visit other nearby towns/cities.

Whether you want those 3 cities to be in different countries is up to you. Sounds like you do. In that case, just make sure your travel logistics are efficient. You don't want to lose a half a day in transit because of connecting flights, etc.

For travel agencies, my wife and I use TripMasters. We have had excellent experiences every time. You can do everything...flights, hotels, trains, buses, whatever. All wrapped up into one transaction. And they can get great deals with hotels.

TripMasters

In terms of specific advice, given the circumstances you provided, I think a cool trip could be:

-Dublin: A European party destination. A group of twenty-something guys would have a blast. Hit the Guiness Brewery one day. Potential day trips to surrounding towns like Kilkenny.

-London: Plenty to do and see in London. Potential day trips to Oxford, Cambridge, and Cliffs of Dover.

-Paris: Same as London. Plenty to see/do. You could spend 3-4 entire days in Paris and still not scratch the surface. I'm not sure I'd even worry about day trips. Just stay in Paris the whole time.

A non-stop flight between each of those cities is probably about 1 hour. Or you could train from London to Paris, which is about a 2.5 hour trip.

Absolutely.

Agree, but disagree. But it may just be semantics.

I think that the number of hotels you stay in does matter.

I am a big proponent of staying/sleeping in one city for an extended period and using it as a launching pad for day trips to other surrounding towns/cities. There's A LOT to be said about the mental energy and stress associated with staying in 7 different hotels in 10 days.

Checking in, unpacking, re-packing, worrying about missing the last train because your hotel tonight is in the next city. I could go on. There's MUCH less stress and pressure when you stay in just a few cities and plan daily excursions from there.

I use tripmasters as well, and have great experiences with them. Everything is about trip is customizable, though you can probably get the city transfers cheaper by booking on your own.

I would probably not do more than 3 or 4 cities depending on how long you are going to be there. Certain areas are easily traveled via train with only a few hours between them. For instance, you could do an Italy trip with Venice/Florence/Rome just as easily as Paris/Belgium/Amsterdam. It really depends on what you and your friends want out of the trip.

I planned my trip for a month last December by myself, its better that way. more mobility.

Set a flight there, and a flight back, and just move as you wish between the time

Look into Contiki. It’s geared for young travelers 18-35. You see the sites during the day and go to clubs at night. Usually full of Australian, New Zealand travelers. I used them for Europe and Egypt. Great experience each time.

OP if you end up doing it yourself (we do but I like the planning almost as much as the going), Man in Seat 61 is an invaluable resource for train travel in Europe.
