Only update I have for the moment is that I've officially flown on international first class where the seats turn into beds, and I don't know how I can go back to my normal economy seating.
My company flew me that way when I had to work in Saudi Arabia for 3 1/2 months. I will never fly across the pond any other way now.
As long as you get the sleep cycle right you have no problems

Indonesia and specifically the Bali area are on my bucket list will try and go with in the next few years. We usually do Hawaii every 5 years but I may extend my vacation to 3 weeks and bite the bullet and keep going. The flights are brutal but I want to surf that area so bad. I enjoyed this thread but the pics didn't load.

Nusa Dua is fine as I have been to Bali about 18 times, mostly in October for the Bali Classic Golf Tournament, and I always stay in Nusa Dua. We stay either at the Westin or Grand Hyatt where the night events for the tournament are held, and we play at nearby Bali National Golf Club, which I heard they closed it down for now. Another option is New Kuta about 25 minutes from there or the nicest Par 3 golf course in the world.
Those hotels can cost $3-400, but we get them for about $180 during the golf event as the event has been going on for almost 30 years and we get great pricing and have the final party/dinner/awards night at the Convention Center.
If you want to go on a budget, the Courtyard Marriott or Novotel are also inside Nus Dua and much cheaper from $120-150. Even cheaper just outside the gates of Nusa Dua there are some cheaper options like Mercure for $40-50 but probably noisy and low cost furniture. The Grand Bali is next to the Novotel where the exit is outside the gates on the side road and those rooms are huge with large marble bathrooms and can get that place for $60-80. Note: It is very safe inside Nusa Dua and also safe outside the gates in the nearby areas.

I flew to Jakarta a few years ago. I connected in Tokyo which is about a 12 hour flight. I was relieved, I thought, that the trip was almost over. Then I saw the flight from Tokyo to Jakarta was 7 hours. It’s a long flight but well worth the trip especially if you can go business class or better.

quote:It was probably business class, not first class. There are only a few shitty airlines that have business class seats that do *not* go flat. The difference between 1st and biz on Lufthansa seems to be a crew member just for a couple of 1st class seats, and a rose at every seat. But it's a price differential of $12k vs $4k, and still a lay flat seat.
international first class
On some Asian and Gulf airlines, 1st may get you a personal cabin, but I'm just saying that if your expectation is a lay flat seat, it doesn't need to be 1st class.

Thank you for the clarification 8 years later.

I fell victim to the out of date bump. I didn't realize Abu Dhabi was months behind, rather than hours ahead!
