Anyone ever charter one of the 50ft ones with or without a crew and island hop? If so any recommendations or suggestions?

BVI. That or St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They might be the two best locations in the world for island hopping.

We did the Alpha Cat Charter in Abaco this past December.
Alpha Cat Charters

We had 4 couples, stayed 5 nights on the boat and spent another night in Marsh Harbour the last night. It was an AWESOME trip!

The Captain would move the boat daily to a new location, refill our ice and check the boat over to see if we needed anything. He would give a weather update and head back to the office. We rented the small dingy that they pulled behind the boat when we moved so we could get around a bit on our own and I would definitely recommend the dingy. It helped with moving from the beaches back to the boat and we could move ice chest, towels etc. with ease. Each suite had a small private full bathroom and queen size bed. It was small but comfy. Boat had kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel gear on board. Fishing is poo from the boat, but you can do a charter if you wish. Some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. When the captain leaves you for the evening you literally are alone and rarely see another boat in site.

Food: When they picked us up from the airport in Marsh Harbour they brought us to a supermarket to do all our shopping. We had pre-organized our meals, snacks and alcohol before we left the states, each couple took a night to cook and the 5th night we went into Harbor Town and ate at a small outside restaurant there and listened to local music. The store was pretty much like any american grocery store with some different products mixed in but you can find most that you need in there. Seafood options are very limited and all frozen but large beef selection. Boat had a full kitchen and small propane pit on the back of the boat.

We're going back in June 2020, same four couples. Same boat. It was a great trip, just make sure the people can get along because you can not get away from each other at all!!!! Luckily our group really enjoyed ourselves and got along great!

Bahamas are very nice but if you are going to do this, look at Virgin Traders charter company in the BVI's. I have done this three different times in the past years and I can tell you it is one of the finest experiences you can have. We did it with one other couple and their son the last year and there are so many different things you can do and so many places to see,so so much more than the Bahamas and the people are HAPPY to have you there. As a dive instructor I can tell you there are a huge number of dive sites and if you don't dive, you can snorkel and see so so much more than the Bahamas. OK, I'll stop but will be here to answer any and all questions you may have.If you have any boating skills, do a bare boat and do it with a good bud that you can share the mate duties with. There is no anchoring to deal with, mooring balls are everywhere.I can provied a lot of guidance and suggestions having been there and done that.
I cannot tell you how wonderful the BVI's are.............

Thanks, I’ll contact Alpha Cat and get the info. That seems like the perfect mix by having the captain bring you around during the day so you can relax and chill. How were the ports each night? Did they any bars you can take the dingy too?

If I can answer any questions I would love to. Three couples went blind the first time after much research and it was so good we went back the following two years. We chartered an Horizon 50' bare boat and loved it. Virgin Traders has so great cats as does the Moorings now. BARS ARE EVERYWHERE ON THE ISLANDS!!. We didnt need a Capt but if you do thats great too. He/she will know the drill and the spots!!

How hard is it to navigate the local waters? I heard everything is basically in sight jumping from 1 island to the other.

In the BVI's it is much easier than the Bahamas because of the water depth vs the islands of the Bahamas. You are also in more protected waters in the Sr Francis Drake Channel. The only place that has an interesting nav channel is Anedga. You get charts and nav tools but there are also easy to read maps that with a Chart Plotter on each boat nav is no sweat. They'll give you an orientation before you leave the dock. As for provisioning, you can shop when you get there, let the grocer deliver to the boat and store the food yourself while one or two of you do the orientation. The fridge and the freezers on board will take care of you, Also there are folks who come by you daily at the moring sites that will bring you everything fro scuba tanks to ice to apples to lobsters plus you tow a dingy and you can go get stuff when you are at mornings by towns and resorts.

I'd love to talk to you and the Mrs in person or email or phone if you can send a private message somehow. Just let me know if anybody wants some info. As it says, I'm in Lafayette.
Peace be with you..................

You can kinda choose how you want to be set up. We had a mix of seclusion and night life. We had nights where we were then only one in the area and had an entire island to ourselves. We could collect wood and light a fire on the beach at night with no on else around. Two of the nights we were near night life. One night was in Harbor town marina where we were moored and could go into Harbor town and enjoy the area. Everyone was awesome and fun to be around! Another night we were near an island with a local bar & grill. We boated in and enjoyed the night life!

If want snorkeling they anchor you in areas for better snorkeling. We were in protected coves every night and they checked winds and set us up in optimal spots so we had no worries regarding the boat. It was a cool experience. Having the captain took the worries about the boat out of our hands, if we got drunk, no worries Captain got it!

Thanks.

We've been to the BVI many times. We're headed down to St. John next Wednesday and have a couple of day charters planned for that trip. It will be interesting to see how things are coming along down there.

I sailed the BVIs with Festiva in 2012 and it was the best week of my life! I was solo and Festiva paired me up with 2 couples. We bar hopped and snorkeled 1-2 locations every day. Everything was first rate and very reasonably priced. I'm planning on sailing with them again soon. Check them out: LINK

My understanding is that you have to have years of documented sailing experience to rent a boat without a captain and they will make you show them upon arrival? I don't have any actual experience, but I've looked into some trips a little myself. There may be some Islands that are looser, its been a couple of years since I've tried so I'm not sure. I mean it makes sense, most people will tell them they are "experienced".

Just get a captain. It’s not a big add and they’ll show you the ropes.

Your trip sounds awesome

How calm is the water in regards to motion sickness? I’d love to do something like that i just don’t know if I can handle it
