Taking a break from hurricane news.

When people say backpacking Europe is this traveling light , town to town by walking, hitchhiking or public transit.

Or actually backpacking wilderness areas.

I would think the first thing. And what was your plan if you did this. It sounds fun and after I get to see all 50 states Europe will be my next visit. Sounds like a good way to get accustomed to overseas before exploring Asia and other areas.

I’ve done tons of wilderness backpacking in the states so some of that in Europe would be fun also.

Backpacking is whatever you want to define it as. My brother and I did 10 cities in 17 days across 4 countries a few years back. Some cities we hung around for 1/2 day and others were 3 days or so. We had actual backpacks and stayed in hostels. He included some of those memories in his best man speech...one of our best memories together.

depends on where they are going. many places dont allow primitive camping in the wilderness, so if they are tent camping, they are usually camping at a hostel or refuge

My wife and I are doing Tour Du Mont Blanc next summer and its light pack. Change of clothes, toiletries, water bottle, sleeping bag liner. Food we either eat in town, carry lunch for the day, or stop at a refuge and eat lunch. Breakfast and dinner are at hotels or refuges

I guess it could mean different things for different people, but when I did it was packing light, staying in cheap hostels, and taking trains from city to city, with lots of walking/public transportation within said cities.

1 backpack to take as a carry-on. Fly into one place and out of another. Book trains and busses as needed. I did it in 2014. 65 days. 13 countries. World cup year. All under $5k. Best 2 months of my life, though I was very ready to be home around day 55.

Did you plan in advance where you were staying and going. Or just went where it sounded fun.

Booked a flight into Milan and a flight out of Dublin. Just knew I needed to be in Dublin by that date.

It was pretty awesome. Travelled the first 3 weeks with my wife (gf at time). A few weeks solo, and the last portion with a buddy. Each of those was different.

We found 3 days in any one place was plenty for what we were doing. Would look at trains/cheap flights and go from there. Met some people in a few places we just tagged a long with. Maninseat51 I believe was a huge help for trains. All the budget airlines had flights under $50. Highly recommend Ireland/Scotland and Eastern Europe if you do this. Loved Eastern Europe.

When I went in 1992, I had a Eurrail Pass and would sometimes just go to the train station and get on the next train, wherever it was going. I was there for four months and spent 4k (in 1992 dollars).

In Western Europe, that basically meant not eating at sit-down restaurants. I ate from bakeries, street vendors, or grocery stores. It meant walking or using public transportation inside cities.

Exactly what I want to do. Most likely won’t have four months but three weeks and decent cash to spend should be a good time.
