OP should definitely hit Krog and walk a mile of the Beltline in either direction from there. Plenty of cool restaurants, breweries, and people watching.

Taking the route up 400 is a MUCH better drive. Don’t be tempted to save the 3 min. going up 85.
Route it through Dahlonega, you can park right off the square and walk around. Hit some ice cream at Connie’s and a beer at Dahlonega Brewery. Plenty of wineries in the area, if you’re inclined.

This is kind of where our plans are falling out. Appreciate the responses!

No one goes downtown for anything recreational. Huge misconception on TD.
It’s mostly Gov’t office, GSU, and for sporting events. It’s arguably not even the actual “CBD” of the city.

Trust me, I wasn't there for fun. But i second you that start at krog and walk the beltline north.

I think most people would be surprised how big of a convention/meeting city Atlanta is. The airport and GWCC brings lots of that in. My wife used to be in the events/meeting industry and she said at any given time, ~80-90% of the hotels downtown are usually booked. A byproduct of that is that not many people actually live in that area, so it is mostly business/govt/Ga State/sporting events like you said.

Good suggestions otherwise.

If you like hiking, you'll be very close to the AT - LINK I'm assuming you'll be staying on Lake Chatuge. It's a great area.

Unfortunately, nobody ever tells the convention attendees not to take MARTA from the airport to downtown.

Alpharetta is really the CBD, but the real character of GA comes out when you get north of ATL metro, like Dahlonegha, etc. You're halfway to Chattanooga at that point, but the rule is pretty much lakes, lakes, lakes, and hiking. Beautiful as hell. Just get a VRBO and some groceries. There is an Oktoberfest "town" near there that is fun to visit as well, closer to Dahlonegha than Alpharetta.

Be warned: If you're having to do work stuff anywhere near the loop (285) or certain parts of the city, Waze may tell you it's 17 miles, but at 7AM it may easily take you 90 minutes to get to a parking spot from places *in* the city (Marietta, Cobb County, Woodstock, etc) Think Baton Rouge in late 2005, and make that on every street. ATL is second only to DC metro in terms of horrific traffic.

Has anyone mentioned Porche NA HQ near the airport?

Great restaurant overlooking their test
track and you can also take a Porsche for spin (around $400)

If you're up in Hiwassee check out the multiple wineries in the north Georgia mountains
