Heading to Asheville around NYE with kids (8 and 5). Can you guys give me some “must do” things while we’re there? Also, any recs on where we should stay/eat. TIA

Use the search function on this board, Asheville is a very popular topic and you should find tons of advice.

Asheville is also a destination pinned in the first post of the board (although not the best thread). In my experience the search function doesn’t go back too far in history. If you go to google and google “Asheville Tigerdroppings” you’ll get a lot more older posts. Hiking, lodging, trips, restaurants, breweries, etc. have all been discussed thoroughly and often here.

Link to story about Christmas lights in NC
This is a list across the state so most of it won’t apply but there are a few at Asheville.

Be sure to bring lots of hand sanitizer and remember to kick some dirty hippies on the way out of town.

Haven't the hippies kind of ruined Asheville to a certain extent?

Yep. The wife and I last went there probably ten years ago. To illustrate just a few things, huge dirty hippy drum circles, homeless people sleeping in doorways, soiled underpants littering the sidewalk. Not to mention expensive. We haven't been back, I doubt it's gotten better since then.

One of the great authentic tapas restaurants in the country is there: Curate.

Or stay if you like the best outdoor scenery in the eastern united states, are into amazing breweries, great restaurants, luxurious lodging options, high adventure outdoor activities, fantastic art scene, etc.

I'm spending a couple of months in Asheville, and this is incredibly dramatic. There is a sizable homeless contingent at Pritchard Park, but that's about it.

Beer scene here is wild.

It's not "incredibly dramatic," it's what we saw when we were there. The place is an over-priced, hippie infested tourist trap. There's a bajillion better places to go in Western Carolina than fricking dirty Assville.

Lmao all right. That's not even remotely close to what I've experienced. Place looks like Charleston demographically on Friday - Sunday.

Overpriced? Really unsure of what you're expecting if a titanic number of restaurants in very close proximity to one another starting in single digit pricing is overpriced.

There are literally no cities of any scope worth visiting in western NC besides Asheville unless you're looking for a mountain retreat, which is monumentally stupid to even begin comparing to Asheville.

Sure, if you can even get in to them. They all have lines that string around the building. Then, once you finally get in, you have to wait in another 20 minute line just to get a refill. No beer is worth that kind of wait.

fantastic art scene

Let's not get carried away.

I went recently, and honestly, it was kind of overrated. The wait times were insane everywhere, and the service was bad at most places too.

It is pretty, though. I'll give you that.

I’ll just come out and say it, Asheville is overrated. It’s fine, but it’s overrated.
