Anyone have any experience planning your own excursions at cruise port?

The company is Viator, reviews are decent to excellent and cost is cheaper than what cruise ship offers.

Same tours for less bucks.

Anyone care to comment?

Yes, that's all I ever do, don't book through the ship. Check out tripadvisor for whatever port your going to and they will have all kind of recommendations of tours

Ship booking always costs you more. Only advantage I am aware of is that the ship won't leave you if your return is delayed using one booked by the ship. On all our cruises I have never seen a tour delayed leaving someone stranded but I have seen people running down the dock after the ship finally is released from the dock after waiting 20 minutes and usually those late were over served at whatever bar they were in.

Viator owns TripAdvisor, or the other way around... not sure

You can get better bargains at the docks if you want to go independent.

Correct. If you book independently they'll leave without you and you'll have to find your own way to get back to the ship in the next port

It happens quite often

We’ve taken lots of private shore excursions with no problems. We get reviews/recommendations from Cruise Critic boards, Trip Advisor, and Facebook groups.

It almost happened to us in the Southern Caribbean but we weren't on an excursion. Got back from excursion with what we thought was time to kill and the clocks on our phones weren't the right time.

We got yelled at for being 15 minutes late (and the port police? picked us up in their golf carts.)

The next day the ship was delayed for about an hour leaving the port because a passenger punched someone before he got on and the police came on board and got him off the ship.

I don't doubt that the ship will leave you if you're not back within a few minutes of the scheduled time.

They will here. I've got a lot of experience with the industry. I've seen it happen several times.

The good thing is most independents are usually mixed in with cruise purchasers, so if they're late, they'll hold.

Have done tours off ship all over the Caribbean and Europe. In Europe we did all private tours. They were great. Just my family in a van or Benz sedan. We'd hit a tourist site and as we are leaving, here come the buses. Stayed ahead of the game all day. Prices weren't actually that much more than doing the big tours through the ship.
