Became very interested in overlanding(camping from your vehicle in remote areas) in the last couple years. So far have done some weekend trips here in Louisiana, mainly Kisatchie. Looking to make some longer trips in the near future.

I went on vacation up in Idaho and saw some of the trailers and fell hard for the idea.

I’m a total wannabe. I love the idea and the style but just can’t make the move.

I look at all the trailers and even put in an order for one out of alabama but backed out.

Same I can’t make myself commit that much money to it yet. Maybe one day but not quite there.

I did recently buy a 4 door wrangler and slowly outfitting it.

Curious where you went in Kisatchie? We've gone a couple times but just to ride a few trails for the day. I marked a few cool spots for future use, one day anyway.

I don't know if I'd call it going full on overlanding but I do like the idea and lightly want to get into it as a different way to get outdoors once our kids get a little older(3 and 1 currently). Nothing serious, camping at Kisatchie, camping at Holly Beach or Rutherford Beach, etc. the occasional trip to Colorado.

I've slowly collected some stuff, I've got a big roof top tent, I've used it on a bedrack on my F250 a few times but I don't want to take that offroad much. We've got a 4Runner but I need to order a roof rack to be able to use the tent.

Just west of Georgetown from 165 to 167 there are lots of trails. Some are open only during hunting season but plenty open year round. Don’t go in a vehicle that you’d be worried about scratching up because most aren’t maintained. I have the onX off-road app to help find trails

Gotcha, I've only been around the Calcasieu Ranger District a little bit, never ventured to that area. I use OnX as well, anytime we're travelling anywhere I use it to check if there's any trails nearby. A few months ago we hit some trails for the day out near Broken Bow OK and made a day of it.

I want to make a trip to the Broken Bow area as well.

I talked to my son this morning and we’re planning to do some trails in Ouachita National Forest Mother’s Day weekend. Possibly stay at Petit Jean SP

You mean camping OP? I'm not sure why anyone made this fancy word.

The problem with the south is that there's not a lot of public access you can camp overnight that's not by the road. Out west there's tons of National Forest you can just drive down a dirty road and camp, or drive offroad and camp.

The west though has much better weather for camping for the most part. Its camping weather in the summer or spring and fall at least and the days are nice but the nights get cool to sleep and sit around a campfire.

Our camping season is basically winter and the fall and spring closer to winter than summer.

I've done it all camping wise. Those weird off road things they build really aren't nearly as cool as they think. There's not that many places you can't drive an RV to that you want to stay overnight or can't hike to fairly easily. There just aren't. The fact is when you are on a longer trip or the weather goes to shite, those aren't much fun at all to be in compared to something bigger and more comfortable.

Yeah it’s basically glorified camping and I’m never gonna be the guy that lives out of a tent for a week or longer. It’s all in what you enjoy doing and doing it in the way that best meets your individual tastes.
