Heading in and out of Naples airport in early June with 9 nights total (8 full days). We get in late our first night so I will probably stay in Naples for at least one night and then head to the coast. We are definitely going to stay in Positano for at least half the dates but I think eight days in one spot is too much. Anyone have recommendations of what other towns or cities to stay in that area? Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri, Ravello or somewhere else? We won’t have a car.

Not exactly on that side of the peninsula, but we stayed in Sorrento and loved it. Only a few minutes away.
Lots of nice shops and restaurants.
Easy boat ride over to Capri and Amalfi.

We stayed in Naples and traveled to and from Amalfi/Salerno for day trips so I don't really have much to recommend. The thing that surprised me was how dirty/big city like Naples was so I feel like you're already 5 steps ahead of what we did. I bet in 8 days you'll be able to full immerse yourself in the culture and experience some incredible food and scenes. I'm super jealous!

We went this past summer so the crowds were still recovering from COVID and all of the merchants/restaurants were super nice and grateful for us being there. Our highlight in Amalfi (Besides having a private Mass in St. Andrew's Basilica) was Antica Trattoria Barracca. The owner waited on us personally and we really lingered... Really hope y'all enjoy yourselves!

We had the exact opposite experience. It was crowded and hot, to each their own I guess.

Forgot to mention to OP, Pay close attention (if it's important to you) about hotel Air Conditioning.... definitely not standard.

We spent 7 nighls in Positano the week before Easter 2016 and loved it. We did not have a car but took day trips by ferry to Capri, the Town of Amalfi and Ravello.

Positano is my favorite. If you don't want to stay there the whole time, my second choice would be the Town of Amalfi. It is a pretty place with some good restaurants and a beautiful and historic cathedral. And it is on a convenient transportation route.

Restaurant advice -

The most romantic restaurant we have ever been to (my wife is an expert in this subject) is LaSponda in Le Serinuse Hotel in Positano. It is lit not with electricity but with 400 candles and there are large windows overlooking the town and the Mediterranean. And the food is delicious. And they have an outdoor terrace bar with the same spectacular view.

Ravello is a gorgeoug place and I definitely recommend visiting, but I don't consider it a good base because it is remote and it is not easy to get to other places from there. It is on top of a small mountain above the Town of Amalfi. It is only about a 5km drive, but it tales around a half hour because the road is narrow and winding. There are several public and private transportation services from Amalfi to take you up there.

Capri is worth a day trip but I would rather spend more time in those other places. If you want to see the Blue Grotto, make sure it is open that day. The day we were there the weather was nice but the Blue Grotto was closed because the waves were too rough.

The Amalifi Coast is a fantastic vacation destination, one of my favorites.

We did nights in Ravello, Positano and Sorrento, in that order. Our favorite by far was Ravello. I highly recommend 3 nights there and a few in Positano. While in Positano, we did the private boat charter for a day and went to Capri and around the coast, which was fun.

Ravello is my favorite place to stay and take boat tours and day trips from there.

We stayed on Capri (Cap-ree) and took ferries to the other towns. Capri is nice because you have the town at the bottom with all the pretty, very rich people and Anacapri at the top which is more laid back and affordable.

We went last fall in mid September. Was a nice day, also not many people due to Covid still slowing tourism.
I could see where it would be a hot miserable place in the summer.

Thanks for the input everyone. Not really sure where we are are going to stay yet other than Positano but this is some good info to help make that decision.

We stayed in Praiano and was perfect for what we needed. It is a smaller, sleepy town next to Positano. The views are spectacular, because it overlooks the sea and Positano. (Many of the pictures you see of Positano are taken from Praiano). It was the end of a two week trip, so we enjoyed the relaxed vibe. We took the sita bus (terrifying, but convenient) to Positano, Ravello and a few small beaches like the famous Fiordo di Furore).

If you enjoy hiking, there is a hike called “The Path of the Gods” that begins in the village above Praiano and finishes in the village above Positano.

We went to Amalfi Coast area in late May/early June a while back. Stayed in Sorrento and one night on Capri. I am glad we did the night on Capri b/c Blue Grotto was inaccessible on our first day there. Saw it the next morning instead.

We took the slow Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento. We stopped at Pompeii on way back to Naples.

Herculaneum (in suburbs of Naples) is way smaller than Pompeii and can be seen in an afternoon (if you have less time).

There are ruins of a Roman amphitheater in Pozzuoli (the underground passages and tunnels can be toured) and other Roman ruins in that area to see.

This young dude I follow on YT somehow goes to the most luxurious & beautiful places on earth. How he affords to spend multiple nights in multiple cities is beyond me.

Anyway, here is his Amalfi Coast trip with his top 10 places he stayed

Stayed almost a week on Capri. Nights are the best when ships leave. Can schedule a flexible boat ride/swim up the coast (Positano and Amalfi) when weather is nice.

Day trip back over to Naples (most aggressive Italian city imo).

Some great local restaurants most don’t get time to explore.

Hotel Punta Tragara think that was it was great.

Stayed first two days (one full day to get adjusted) in Rome. Think the hotel is a b&b now and was a package with Punta Tragara. All I remember is shower sex overlooking the Coliseum and never again eat Frutti di Mare.
