All-Around Recommendations for St. John, USVI?

We're set on St. John; it looks like it offers the best balance of ease of access while not being over-touristy. I'm starting to plan lodging and activities, etc.:
It's only my wife and I for probably 5 nights in mid-May.
1. What's the best side of the island to stay on?
2. We are fine with Air BnB unless we can find comparable commercial lodging or vacation rental. There seems to be a lot of whole-apartment rentals available.
3. I scuba dive and she snorkels, so I'll need to find a good company to knock these out.
4. Is there any public transportation? Or do we need to rent a vehicle?
5. Also looking for recs for nightlife, food, etc. from those who know.

Cruz Bay. You can bus to Trunk Bay. Rent a jeep. Rockhoppin for BVI excursion to Jost. Bring passports. Drive across the island for lunch at Skinny Legs. Eat dinner at Extra Virgin. Get a condo at Grande Bay. Beach Bar is open now. I don’t know if Joe’s Rum Hut is open yet.

Do you want seclusion? If so, Jumby Bay is perfect for this.
Nightlife, etc. you've got plenty of options. T and C, St. John, BVIs, St. Barth.

With that budget? Lots of choices.
St. John, Tortola, St. Barths, St. Vincent and Providenciales are where I’d start my search.

If you prefer that feeling of having a private island get-away with your own exclusive area for scuba diving, snorkeling, and hiking, the east side.
Rent a Jeep. It will be useful to explore the island at your own pace rather than someone else’s schedule. There is a transportation service that’s basically a pickup with rows of bench seating in the back. It seems to have a fixed route, and that route does not go to the east side.
When we went, we rented an east side house on a small cliff overlooking the water with it’s own private snorkeling area at the bottom of a pathway. The area was dense with coral, but that wasn’t a deal breaker. We could go all day without seeing or hearing another person unless boats would pass. It had a gorgeous view of the other islands from our balcony overlooking a small cliff.
There’s a restaurant in the area of Coral Bay that featured all you can eat grilled lobster one night per week. Place called Aqua Bistro. It was my favorite meal.
Cruz Bay on the west side is where you’ll find most of the night life.

Keep in mind that the water is rougher on the east (exposed) side and access to get into the water from shore is much more limited in areas. The beaches are north, west and south on the island.

My wife and I stayed in Coral Bay when we went. Found this place called the Tea Treehouse, it was perfect! It was secluded with great views. They provided the basic snorkeling gear, ice chest, towels etc. Definitely rent a Jeep so you can explore all parts of the island.

Wife and I went to St. Thomas for honeymoon but went to St. John a few days while we were there. Maho Bay had best snorkeling IMO. Beds of sea grass which sea turtles flock to. Hawksnest Bay was great as well. May not be good for snorkeling but waves were more like a wave pool rather than crashing waves. Rent a jeep. We had a normal car and had trouble getting around some places. Skinny Legs is a good lunch spot on St. John. Not sure what is open since the storms passed through.
