The Walmart Corona Crowd is Disgusting

Posted by Caddeaux on 3/29/20 at 3:29 pm
Beware.

Our 30 day stay-at-home order begins tomorrow, so I begrudgingly went to Walmarks to stock up on pine bark mulch to take advantage of the impending sabbatical.

I tried to limit my exposure to the crowds, but had to step inside to pay. Even at the garden center, I am aghast at 1) the laziness of the people who work there, and 2) the dredges of society who seem to flock to Wal-Mart en masse.

I initially retaliated against the term, but are these people "The Deplorables" that Hillary was describing?

Maybe I'm paranoid because customers and cashiers are coughing all over the place without covering their mouths, and aren't even attempting to honor the 6 feet minimum separation guidelines.

I'll check in 14 days from now to report on any impending Corona symptoms.
Evangelical pastor mocks ‘pansies,’ won’t close church for coronavirus

Is this ignorant? Selfish? Divine?

quote:

“If you cannot be saved in church, you in serious trouble,” Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne told Florida’s River Tampa Bay Church, as he encouraged congregants to hug in defiance of health warnings.

“Listen, this has to be the safest place,” the leader of the Florida-based Revival Ministries International pronounced, as shown in a video he retweeted from the group Right Wing Watch.

“We are not stopping anything,” he said. “I’ve got news for you, this church will never close. The only time the church is closed is when the Rapture is taking place,” he said to laughter.
quote:

“This Bible school is open because we’re raising up revivalists, not pansies.”

Sorry, but isn't this a state-level issue?

How is this Trump's fault that Cuomo wasn't prepared for this?

The expectation that the Fed is responsible is ridiculous.
Any Audubon Eagles on here?

Started 1st grade in '91, went all the way through 5th grade. Always thought I'd go to that middle school next door (can't think of the name), but my parents made me go to Episcopal.

That was a great school.

LIKE EAGLES...LIKE EAGLES, Y'ALLLLLL...
It's not made public and apparently applications are vetted pretty intensely.

Currently preparing to apply; if anyone here has used it, how much is the discount? Is the tactical gear worth a damn?

I understand being unable to save while in college and the first 2-3 years after you enter the workforce; I was there once myself.

But the majority of the nation is not 18-25; I feel like there are adults with families who have no safety net, and frankly will never have the means or intent to save.

It's pitifully sad.
The guest (female economist, can't remember her name) used to work for the Obama administration, so I already expected to hear some left-of-center viewpoints, but she was arguing that tax cuts preferred by Trump are not the way to go because they fail to benefit those who have lost their jobs or didn't pay taxes to begin with.

Her second point was that people need the (in my opinion negligble) $1,000 proposed cash sum immediately because they are really hurting right now (after a mere 2 weeks into this "crisis").

I was always taught to make sure you have enough savings to live for 3-6 months without steady income. This is exactly what my wife and I made a point to save. I guess this means we had to forgo some of the luxuries other people our age indulge in, but it was more important to feel secure, and I can guarantee we don't miss having a new $1,200 iPhone every year, or a 75-inch TV, or whatever the average consumer is spending their 'disposable' income on.

My question is: does the average American really not have any money saved? If so, I think that speaks volumes about the state this nation is really in.

God forbid we have an actual crisis. These people would be living in the woods and eating sticks.

With house seats at stake as well as electoral college votes, do we bump up our numbers to counteract the effect of all the illegals who will be counted in the census?
I'm thinking no...then you'd be just as bad or worse than them.

Anyone Here Use the Light Phone?

Posted by Caddeaux on 3/14/20 at 3:05 pm
Light Phone

The concept is appealing, but I'd be interested to talk to people who have actually used it.

$350 is pretty steep for a phone that only makes calls and SMS...

No - it means they are curing any unnecessary travel which could allow personnel to catch the virus and then bring it back to a base. It's a measure to contain the virus where it is.

Good gesture, but not sure I agree with his "these people are still devastated from Katrina" sentiment.
Just returned to the States after living abroad for a few years and got a new phone number; these guys have been calling me incessantly. They say they are from the Social Security Administration and that they need to verify suspicious activity on my account before asking for my SSN. I probably get 4/5 calls a day.

If their Indian accents didn't make it so obvious that it's a scam, I'm sure more people would fall for it. What can they do with my SSN? Sell it? It's not actually that difficult to get someone's SSN, with all the spillage from companies anymore.

Is there a way to keep these Indians from calling me?
We're set on St. John; it looks like it offers the best balance of ease of access while not being over-touristy. I'm starting to plan lodging and activities, etc.:

It's only my wife and I for probably 5 nights in mid-May.

1. What's the best side of the island to stay on?

2. We are fine with Air BnB unless we can find comparable commercial lodging or vacation rental. There seems to be a lot of whole-apartment rentals available.

3. I scuba dive and she snorkels, so I'll need to find a good company to knock these out.

4. Is there any public transportation? Or do we need to rent a vehicle?

5. Also looking for recs for nightlife, food, etc. from those who know.

Thanks in advance! :geauxtigers:

What's the Best Tech ETF?

Looking to diversify; my only ETFs are defense related and I anticipate the next 2/3 years will be a far cry from the last year.

Do you invest in Tech ETFs?

Best Ivy to Grow on a Brick House?

Posted by Caddeaux on 3/5/20 at 8:19 pm
Sorting through different options, but overwhelmed with the number; does anyone have personal experience with a certain type?

Should I even let ivy grow on our brick house?
Long time lurker, first time caller.

Wife and I are looking for an atypical Caribbean destination this Spring (Late May actually) but are overwhelmed with the amount of islands and the unknowns about crime, etc.

We are both 28, no kids; we lived in Europe for 4 years before moving back to the U.S. in December, so we are comfortable traveling but we don't take to the touristy stuff much. We would prefer a remote location that's safe where we can enjoy the natural Caribbean on a self-guided wine (or rum) tour over the course of a week.

After we decided Jamaica was too rough right now, we were settling on the Virgin Islands; however, that's a pretty typical destination and I'm sure it will be crowded that time of year.

I'm obliged to anyone who can share their experiences with a lesser-known destination.
