besides "Don't go." My son is really into rollercoasters and I've promised him I'd take him. The only time is in July and I know it will be hot. Hopefully going on a Monday and Tuesday lowers the crowds.

Where is a decent place to stay? I understand the area around the park is a dump. Is Lithia springs a bit east of the park a decent place to get a hotel? Is the Six Flags parking lot as subject to break-ins as suggested on travel sites?

Any other advice? Thanks.

We've stayed at the Hotel Indigo in Vinings a few times. It's in a nice area and also very affordable. Looks like about a 15 minute drive to Six Flags.

Six Flags is in a war zone. Maybe Uber from your hotel to avoid the car break in. Don’t let your guard down once inside the park.

Lithia Springs is safer than Austell. Not bad; not great.

If you are driving in from the west and do not care about seeing any of the city, the Holiday Inn Express in Villa Rica is convenient, decent and far enough away from the city under siege area to consider. LINK[/link

Are you being serious or exaggerating a bit?

I live near Atlanta and have been twice this year. The first was the Sunday following opening day and I literally did not wait in line behind anyone. I walked right on every ride. It was awesome.

SFOG is a decent park. It’s not Cedar Point or anything, but it’s a fun place to spend a day if you like roller coasters.

Is it a "war zone" like a poster above said? I grew up in New Orleans so I can handle it, but still, I'm with my kid.

Nothing struck me as dangerous about the area, but maybe the poster who called it that knows more than I do. I don't have kids, but if I did I wouldn't have any hesitations about taking them there.

The area around Six Flags can be kind of sketchy, especially one exit east of the park. My son and I went last summer on a Wednesday, and we didn't experience anything all that bad. A group of teenagers trying to break in line was the worst thing we saw. Douglasville a few miles west of the park is a decent area to stay.

Batman was the only ride that had a long line the day we went. We waited about 45 minutes the first time we rode it, and went back later and the line was over an hour so we skipped it.

I have season tickets to SFOG. I've been there about a dozen times over the years. I felt very safe and had zero issues whatsoever.

Goliath is the best roller coaster in the park imo, highly recommended.

I regularly make sales calls in that area. It is not a good area.

Wednesday in July? I'm hoping a Monday and Tuesday in July will have reasonable crowds.

I went in the late 1990s and didn't notice a safety issue.

I might take an earlier poster's advice and go to that Holiday Inn he posted in his link.

Yes, it was the last week of July when we went. There were a few rides we didn't even have to wait in line for.

My parents live the Atlanta area and we often go every time were in town. Like what everyone else said, the park isn’t in the best place so I would stay in the Smyrna or Vinings area.

The park itself isn’t too bad and it can be crowded with summer camps or church groups but the park is spread out so the lines aren’t too bad. Youll enjoy yourself

Jake, if you are still taking this trip can you give us a recap when you get back?

We are planning to take our son in August right before school starts. We have stayed at hotels within walking distance of the other Six Flags and wondering if that is an option at this park or if previous posts hold true.

Thanks

There are hotels right there but I wouldn't stay in them. As mentioned by another poster, one option would be the 75/285 area around Vinings & Sun Trust Park. Maybe get in a Braves game too. Without traffic I'd guess it's only 15 miles. Or Villa Rica to the west on I-20 is maybe 20 miles.

This is what I would suggest.

The areas around the park are sketchy but you'll just be driving through. Like any city in the south there are a plethora of sketchy areas, but none of them rise to the level of really needing to worry about it.

I'd stay in Vinings or Cumberland. Nothing to the west of 285 is good. Again, you won't die, they're just dumpy areas.
