The last week of July we are taking a road trip from NWLA to CO then through UT, AZ, NM or at least as much as we can in 10 days. Kinda playing it by ear. I think it's safe to assume RMNP will be packed. Should I access via Bear Lake Rd or is there another/better entry point?

You should look at a map. There’s no Bear Lake entrance and that road is an out and back that requires a separate reservation. Unless you plan a hike in that area you should avoid it. All of the park is doing reservations and timed entries. You should look at their website, they have a good pdf map as well as the entry info.

I did look at the website.

quote:

There are two types of reservations available. One permit is for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, which includes the entire corridor and access to the rest of the park. This reservation period is from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. The second permit is for the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park, excluding the Bear Lake Road corridor, and includes Trail Ridge Road. This reservation period is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I mistakenly concluded thete was a Bear Lake corridor entrance to the park. My bad.

The bear lake corridor entrance is right off the beaver meadows entrance. The park requires an entry pass. You can get one with Bear Lake or without. They opened passes for July on June 1.
I think they hold like 100 passes for all entry times and release them the day before.

When are you going?

Bear Lake is the most crowded area of the park. If you get in before 6AM there’s no IMO not much of a point in going to that area, just because there are so many people.

I would enter through Estes Park or Grand Lake and find a trail off of Trail Ridge Road. You only need reservations after 9am for these areas last I checked, the trails are generally prettier than Bear Lake area, and it’s much less crowded.

Going the last week of July. I've bought a pass without Bear Lake. Thanks for the info.

We entered through the Falls River entrance near Estes Park. It is supposed to be a less crowded entrance Beaver Meadows. We did not have to wait in early June at 9:00 am - just zipped right in.

Since you’ll be touring the 4 corners, I’d skip RMNP. It’s beautiful, as I’ve been several times, but not much different than the rest of Colorado. I’d focus more on SW Colorado. If you’re going to the Grand Canyon, the North Rim is much less crowded and much cooler. 1,500’ higher elevation. Safe travels.

We went last year. If you do the Bear lake entrance you have to enter the bear lake area during the time slot you booked. But then can visit the rest of the park whenever.

So we booked a time slot for bear lake at like 7 am, went to that area first, then explored the rest of the park.

Go to Grand Lake. Enter park from there. Less crowded than Estes Park.
