I have a 13 hour flight, then a 4 hour layover, then another 11.5 hour flight. I arrive in my final destination at 5:00 pm which is 11 hours behind me. How should I tackle the sleep strategy to minimize jet lag? Sleep on first flight and stay awake on the second? Any tips from you flight gurus?

My longest single flight is still 14.5 hours, but this is the longest travel day.

24 hrs of flights. Won’t you end up where you started? I’d suggest walking.

Unfortunately no. I used to think the world was small. Turns out it is actually rather sizeable.

I've had more trouble going US to Europe than US to Asia. The total time flip always sat well with me.

I think this makes me a freak and therefore any advice meaningless.

I assume you're in business class so I'd just try to work some naps to square up with local time along the way.

As always, whatever you do when you land, if it's daytime don't fall asleep.

I use to try to strategize on long flights to adjust for time change. I’ve got a new approach now - if I’m tired, I sleep i find it easier to adjust once I’m at my destination by staying up the first day, but often times my stay in country is short enough where I’m headed home before I ever get close to adjusted.

Ya you never really get on local time during the flight. But your body definitely needs some rest on the way so you can push through after landing. Day 1 on the ground is the crucial time for any international flight.

You'll have to sleep at some point. Most important thing is to try and go to bed at a somewhat normal time at your final destination. That will help get you back on track. I agree with the comment about Asia being easier to adjust than the 6-8hr difference in Europe. It's also much easier for communicating with home at reasonable hours.

Don't even bother checking for luggage after that. It likely won't make it.

Jesus. That’s insane. I had a 33 hour stretch years ago that still haunts me.

Couldn’t you just go the other way?

That sucks.

My worst is Kathmandu to New Delhi, then a 9 hour layover, then New Delhi to Amsterdam, then a 3 hour layover, then Amsterdam to Atlanta, then a 4 hour drive home.

You get enough long international flights (which a lot of people here have) and any flight in the continental USA feels like walk down the street.

I’ve got MSY-SFO then SFO-SIN on Tuesday with a one year old my lap. 24 hours total. I envy your itinerary.

Agree about CDG, which seems in a perpetual state of renovation. Only bright spot is decent pastries from Paul; you can buy several chasseurs des pommes to eat on the next leg.

Sleep when you get tired. I’d need a ridiculous amount of water to survive that trip.

Just made it to Paris. Slept about 5 hours on the flight. I'll nap on the next flight and then get on local schedule.

About my itinerary... I will spend 2 nights in Brazil, then fly to Buenos Aires, then Rosario. Spend a day there, then fly 10 hours to Houston.

I'll have a >16 hour flight in a week or so from Dallas back to Hong Kong. All of this is after I spent the last week in Nanjing and Shanghai.

So in 1 week I'll have been to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Houston. Population wise, that's like 100 million people.

My body hates me.

My longest was NOLA-Dallas-Frankfurt-Dammam, Saudi Arabia
I didn’t sleep really on the first or second leg. I slept from Germany to Saudi. Big mistake. I arrived in Saudi at 1am. Thought I would be able to go back to sleep but couldn’t. Two weeks it took to get over jet leg.
Three months later I fly home.
Saudi-Frankfurt-Chicago-NOLA
My flight left at 1:30am Saudi time. I stayed awake all flight to Germany. Slept from Germany to Chicago. I arrived there at 10am Chicago time. Didn’t sleep Chicago to NOLA. No jet leg and was back to normal the next day.
My suggestion is to sleep at your final destinations normal sleep time to minimize the jet leg. I didn’t do that on the way there but did on the way home. It worked out much better.

Man, that's brutal. Not sure what you're traveling for, but those are the ones that really make me question if I really need a paycheck. I think the worst for me is MSY-O'Hare-Narita-Manila-Palawan. Getting on a 6+hr flight after a 13+hr is rough...then still not being at your destination sucks.

That sounds brutal. At least I only have 2 back to back flights. I actually like all the meetings and visits I'm taking, so it is worth the paycheck. And this is not typical for my job. I normally take one long haul flight every 4-6 weeks, but I've had a lot to do this month.

Just got back from France - these and fruit crumbles were my daily go-to.
