Lattitudes is a tourist trap I worked there for 4 years.
Ocean key is my favorite resort. I like the hot tin roof at OK as well. My fav restaurant is Michaels. Louie's back yard is the most romantic on the island in my opinion. Great deck for day drinking on the water as well.
Green parrot has a good HH and best live music at night.
Other HH include 2cent and conch farm. Conch farm has live music.
Best food truck is garbo's grill at grunts bar very decent lunch.

Worst bars are senor frogs, sand bar, and has monkey, ricks, cowboy bills.

Sloppy joes, capt Tony's, hogs breath are all worth dropping in for a at least one

Stay off the scooter as a resident there you couldn't pay me to ride around the island on one. I've been hit 4 times in my car in the last 5 years.

Not sure if it would be worth a full day??

If you are there for 6 days then it absolutely is. I think it's the best thing you can do in Key West. The beaches and water there are gorgeous, they provide snorkel equipment and it's very good for that with a lot of tropical fish. And there is a cool fort to explore. I've camped there for 3 days and loved it.

Eat at Santiago Bodega. Rent bikes, ride around and bar hop. Cork and Stogie and The Porch for craft beer. Rent a jeep and drive to Islamarado for a day. Go fishing with Dreamcatcher charters. Irish Kevin's is fun at night. That's about it.

Good recs on here,

Definitely 7 fish for your upscale dinner, its very legit
green parrot is cool during the day, schooner wharf later on
Stop into eaton st seafood market and crab some stone crab claws for 1/2 what you pay in a restaurant
hogfish bar and grill is def worth the trip
if you go to Bahia Honda go ride the backroads early in the morning to see some key deer.

Agreed on the thumbs-up for Dry Tortugas

I've done it both by ferry and by plane.

Either way is good.

I'd charter fish a day or two if I were there that long.

Lotsa NOLA-Key West connections, I've got a few places I can crash there.

Have fun.

Hog fish grill is awesome it's in the hood but it's worth it. Latitudes is gorgeous it's a bit pricey, but you're on vacation indulge. Buy an island pass $15 and it's good all day.

Would you recommend just going and having a few cocktails at the bar around sunset?

I think you might have to have a reservation to get on the ferry, but If you can go I think it's worth the trip.

We are staying at Ocean Key and it has a sunset pier that is supposed to have great sunsets

Good deal, I've never stayed at Ocean Key but it's right in the heart of everything and you'll probably be able to get a better view of the sunset anyway since you won't have to be squashed in with all the people on Mallory Square.

I was planning on doing this and catching the No Name Pub on the way back. Have you been to this place or heard good things about it? Is this drive to far to take scooters?

No Name Pub is a great stop, definitely recommend. The Looe Key Tiki Bar on Ramrod is worth a stop as well. If you decide to ride around on Big Pine and check out the Key Deer Refuge Drive Carefully! The deer have pretty much zero fear of humans and will and do jump out in front of your car. I actually had one come up and eat trail mix out of my hand in the Winn Dixie parking lot there one time (which is highly illegal, but I didn't realize at the time ) Riding a scooter there is not possible, the rental companies pretty much restrict you to KW. I wouldn't recommend it even if you could because it is a pretty good ride on the highway, and wouldn't be very safe.

Glad you decided to do a Tortugas trip! It'll probably be the highlight of your vacation. Here's a pic I took of one of the snorkeling areas

Personally I would start in Miami, spend a night there, drive down to the Keys, spend a night in the middle keys in say Isla Morada and go to some cool seaside bars, then drive down to KW for a few days.

That's what we are doing. Flying into Miami...renting a convertible/jeep...stay first night in Key Largo dive some, then islamorada next day fishing charter with the kids, then on to key west for 4 days at southernmost beach resort, then on to Marathon for a night fishing trip, and then a night on south beach in Miami. I broke it up so its a fun road trip.

Driving from KW up the highway to any key past stock island is like taking a scooter on I-10 from BRLA to NOLA.

There's no such thing as an island pass for SSK. You basically need a restaurant reservation to take the ferry over and that grants you a walk from the dock to the end of the dock where the restaurant is at. As for the restaurant at SSK, it's a heat and serve operation. Everything comes off a truck in a bag. They cut the bag and pour it in a steam table. Then it's scooped and served. It's plated and garnished very well though.
Ocean Key is 1000x better.
The drive from Miami to KW sucks. For various reasons I have to make it several times this month. I sort of get how if you'd never did it you might like to try it. After half of my first time I was over it. It's like driving from Laplace to Nola and back several times.
