Hi all,

I have a work trip to Stuttgart, Germany at the end of February. I will be taking 3 days off and going to another city before heading home.

Where would you go in Europe?

I have been thinking about:
(In no particular order)

Munich
Lisbon
Amsterdam
Brussels
Amalfi Coast

I have already been to: Paris, Lyon, London, Barcelona, Italy, lake Geneva.

It will be a solo trip. I’m really just looking for a fun place where I can drink, eat great food, see some sights, visit some awesome outdoor markets for a few days.

I almost want to go to Norway to see the northern lights but I’m worried about not being able to see them bc I only have 3 days.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!!

Munich. Although the Amalfi Coast would be a good pick, feel like it would be a better experience in Summer. Go to Munich and day trip around Bavaria.

If you want me to choose from your list, one choice stands out that I would put head and shoulders above the rest and that is the Amalfi Coast. With only 3 days, if you are looking for a fantastic place that is easier to get to ,I would go to Vienna.

You only have three days, look at what’s closest to Stuttgart to start planning.
I’ve been to Amalfi in February—-many things are closed, plus you’re gonna waste most of an entire day of your three day trip getting there from Germany.

If you’re desperate to add another stamp to your passport on this trip, go to Strasbourg....
Less than 2 hrs by train from Stuttgart. Interesting food.

Munich is 2.5 hrs by train, and if you can’t slow down and enjoy yourself for three entire days, you could tack on Salzburg, another 2 hour hop. But you’d still need to train back to Munich to fly home (a waste of 4+ hrs of your short trip).

But also temper your expectations on outdoor markets; it’s February, they won’t be quite as overflowing or charming as you might expect.

Almost 3 and half years in Finland and I still haven't seen it. February is possibly the coldest month in the Nordics.

Prague. You can drive from Stuttgart to Prague in about 4.5 hours. Train is about 6. Flying less than 1. You can buy a 3 day ticket to use all transportation (except taxis) for 315-350 crowns I believe. Which is roughly between 12 to 15 euros. It's super easy to get around the city. The beer is probably the cheapest in Eastern Europe. The food is excellent. The sites and history are incredible.

The only negative thing I have to say about Prague is that their customer service skills are lacking as they still have that stereotypical Iron Curtain mentality about how to treat people. It's not beyond terrible, but if you walk into a restaurant and it's full they don't say, "maybe come back in 1 hour." They just leave it like that.

But overall if you are looking for cheap Prague is the best. If you are not looking for cheap it's still the best and means you can live like a king for 3 days.

With only 3 days, I'd train somewhere under 4 hours that has an international airport to fly back home. Maximize your time there and minimize the amount of potential issues and time wasters. Somewhere like amalfi coast you have a long travel time to and a then from there to an airport also.

Munich, Amsterdam, etc. would be my choice. I'd personally do a small town or on the way to either if going by train.

Munich. Bavaria. If you have to take in another spot you can take a fast train to Salzburg (2 hours total trip) or Innsbruck (not sure of the travel time or type of train to Innsbruck) but both normal trains will take longer than you think.

Thanks for the information!!!

I would prefer to fly to a destination or train if the journey is under 3 hours.

Im not picking from just those 5. I can go anywhere. Prague sounds very interesting.

The destination would have to have an international airport to leave from.

Zurich is nice but might be too expensive for me. I haven’t done much research on it to be honest. I’ll look into it though.

Castles sound nice but it sounds like I would need to rent a car.

I won’t have a car so the city would have to be very walkable with great public transportation. Safe is a key factor as well as I am a solo female traveler.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming!

For the sake of offering a new suggestion, what about Luxembourg? We'll be flying in there for our Alsace trip in April and it sounds like a neat city from the prelim research we've done.

Also

I'll be looking for someone to start a thread mid Feb "Hey any travel board posters in Prague (or wherever you end up) and want to hang out?"

How long will you be there? It's a surprisingly cool city, but very small. It's a great walking city and there's citywide free wifi. Definitely check out the casemates, but be warned that you will be sore the next day.

2 days. Probably 1 day in the city and 1 day for a day trip to Echternach or the Ardennes area in Belgium. Originally we thought just 1 day then move on into France but we found it's worth 2+ days.

How long were you there? Any other recommended side trips?

I've been to two that you have been researching.

Lisbon

Get a hotel in the Baixa district of Lisbon. On day one, start at Castelo de S Jorge. After that, head back towards Baixa and check out the Praca do Commercio, which is the big commercial square. Really neat area w statues and the Arco da Rua Augusta. Head back north and ride the Santa Justa Lift. It's a nice viewpoint and drops you off at the Museo Arqueologico do Carmo. It's the ruins of an old convent that was destoyed and was repurposed as an archaeological museum.

On day two, head over to Jeronimos Monastery, Belem Tower, and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. All right near each other. There's a very famous bakery called Pasteis de Belém right there as well if you want to stop in. After you knock those out, head to Sintra. Check out Quinta de Regaleira and Palacio Nacional before snagging a hotel in town.

On day three you will need to check out the Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, and Monserrate Palace before heading home.

Fair warning, Lisbon airport is a shitshow.

Brussels

It's been a while since my Brussels trip, but Delirium Cafe was great and Mannequin Pis is kind of a disappointment. Make a side trip to Bruges. Bruges is wonderful.

We spent a couple days there before going to Switzerland. I would definitely spend a day just walking around Lux City - the Grund, Casemates, etc. There's a free city walking tour daily, but I found it pretty boring. Vianden castle is supposed to be a good visit, but we didn't get to make it out there.

Alone? I’d probably fly to Amsterdam. You could cover everything in three days. Museums, red light district, Ann Frank House, canals. Might rule it out if you are not into Coffee Shops; Would rule it in if you are. And easy flight back to ???? via Delta/KLM

Lisbon is your answer. Great food, vibrant city with excellent sights.

It's got a lot of the charm of Spain and is a drinking town for sure.

Also fairly small for a big city, and one of the most reasonably priced places in Europe. Probably the cheapest place I've gone on the euro.

Short flight home.

For a solo trip, I think this is your spot
