I'm generally willing to share all the details but that's a secret I'm keeping in this case

Big sky has been great this week. Have gotten timely snow showers Sunday, Tuesday, and today. Lots of varied terrain and you can definitely get away from the crowds if you want.

Check out that gap!

The one thing I didn’t like about big sky was moguls weren’t shown on their map and they had a fair amount of runs with them. Granted I’ve only been skiing 3 times, but the other resorts showed which runs were moguls. Other than that it was a great place to ski.

Where have you seen this? I never have that I can recall.

The thing about moguls is they aren't usually planned, just happen from the people following the same paths over and over. So they can't really be listed on the maps.

ETA: You can look on the electronic list usually at the bottom of the mountain for groomed runs. They are the ones that have been "de-mogulized"

I didn't realize that. I must be mis-remembering then. I thought I saw them on the steamboat map a couple of years ago, specifically Rolex.

some resorts (I think steamboat is one) have interactive online maps that update what is groomed daily and let you apply filters, etc. But the paper map or a static PDF are not going to have that info for the reasons outlined above.

Made it into Banff....

Every time I go outside my hotel and it is amazing views in every direction. Was very surprised at how easy it was to clear customs, a few minutes at a kiosk and then a few minutes talking to a guy about where I was skiing, only thing he wanted was my passport and the sheet of paper the kiosk gave me. Didn't even ask a single question about anything covid.

Skiing Lake Louise tomorrow, Sunshine Village on Thursday and Kicking Horse on Friday.

Great day for spring skiing at Lake Louise. The back bowls were great, snow stayed nice and soft but not overly slushy. The terrian kind of reminded me of mineral basin or montezuma bowl. Lapped paradise bowl for a while, lots of bumps but you could find some smoother steep snow with some traversing.

Ptarmagin lift also had some fun terrian, some more bump runs and a wide open steep cruiser that I spent some time on. Views from the lift were amazing...

Finished my day at the top of the mountain and skiing down west bowl, snow was still solid up there but turned into heavy slush at the bottom of the mountain. The apres vibe was going strong at the base, outdoor bar was packed. The IPA I grabbed tasted great as a waited for my shuttle back to Banff.

Skied Sunshine Village yesterday, snow was pretty good after a 3-4 inch refresh overnight. The odd thing about Sunshine is that you have to take the gondola to get the base area, no cars can access it which isn't something I have seen before. Sunshine is divided into three areas...Goat's Eye, Lookout and Standish. I started the day at the top of lookout which is pictured above, wide open high alpine skiing at the top for most of the runs. This area is a intermediates dream. The views much like at Lake Louise are insane...

After a couple hours of skiing the upper bowls of lookout I worked my way over to Goat's Eye, more of the advanced terrian and longer runs on the mountain are here. There is also some wild hike-to expert terrian if the conditions allow them to be open, it would be a pretty mellow mountain without Goat's Eye. Only realy issue with Sunshine is that there are a lot of flat areas, has to drive snowboarders crazy but you can download from the Gondola to avoid the worst of them.

Question on equipment: we had our second trip this year and thinking about buying my own ski boots. I wouldn’t mind my own skis, but I like the idea of testing out some different ones from the rental place before taking the plunge. What’s the boards thoughts on getting their own equipment?

I think boots are a must if you ski enough each year. A bad pair of boots can wreck a trip, go somewhere with a solid rep and get fitted. Best investment you will make when it comes to skiing.

Skis I think there are pluses and minuses, if conditions change and you rent you can switch them out. Plus you don't have to lug them around and maintain them which can get annoying. I do have skis, found a great deal on some that I like but I ski 20-30 days a year so it makes sense to have them.

Go see Jeff at Bootfixation in Breckinridge if you have any kind of abnormal feet or gait. Couldn’t walk well for two weeks after skiing in rental boots my first time. Went through the process with him, which is a painful 30 minutes itself, but skiing in them afterwards felt like a dream.

Renting boots sucks. Renting skis can be fun especially from a good shop that doesn’t use system bindings.

Do not buy boots over the internet. The fitting process is included in the price of the boot when you buy from a store. At a minimum you will also need to purchase heat moldable footbeds which are about $60, customs are ~$200. The downside of getting fitted at a vacation place is you will have to pay for adjustments and punchouts; local is better if that’s in the cards.

Re:testing some out… The reality is you kind of have to just take the plunge and trust the person doing the fitting. If you’ve only used rental boots with a 100-ish flex, an equivalent to purchase isnt that expensive, say $400 out the door.

ETA: Evo has a lot of decent boots for >$250. (I don’t recommend them but their website is nice to browse).

At the airport now, was a great trip to Banff. The town is fanastic and with the currency exchange things come at a nice discount.

Skied Kicking Horse on Firday and the conditions were firm, the bottom 4/5 of the mountain was boilerplate and the locals were pretty apologetic over the conditions. Still was a beautiful place and the snow going into feuz bowl was ok, the rest of the ride down though to the bottom was firm and icy.

Kind of wish KH would add one more chair to get up the upper mountain but the lack of chairs does make the powder last longer from what I was told. Outside of one lift on the upper mountain, you have to ride up the gondola at the base after each run. Which makes for nice long runs but you can't really lap the good stuff. Things did soften a touch in the afternoon but I will have to come back another time when conditions are prime. While Kicking Horse isn't on Ikon, there was a shuttle from Banff for less than $100 that included the lift ticket which was cheaper than the window for a ticket at the resort that day.

Went to Sunshine yesterday for my last day, snow was terrific considering there hasn't been much of a refresh. Things started out mostly soft with some firm spots and after lunch it was a corn harvest but the snow never really got that sloppy. Had my twin tip faction 1.0s which meant for a lot of fun in the soft bumps, I hit the bump runs near the teepee lift and also on goat's eye. Checked out the Standish area as well, found some areas there that would probably fun on a powder day. Overall it was a great trip to Banff, stayed at the Aspen Lodge which was nice and newly renovated right on the main street of town. Had lots of good food and saw some beathtaking scenery. Will defintely be back again.

Good times! It’s going to be a snowy 2 weeks in CO. Good to see everyone is getting some help with the snowpack for summer.

Great day on the mountain today. The 8" was of the fluffy stuff and not the wet powder so it was a treat, plus it was snowing all day. Lapped a few lifts (Rex, Green Valley, Northway) and was able to find fresh powder all day (13 runs in 3.5 hours). Few spots that were covered up from the 70* weather we had on thursday, but I didn't eat it on a rock so that was good. Rode up with a ski patrol on the Northway lift who said today was the last day for Northway to be open for the season. We'll see though as Crystal's expected to get 33" over the next 5 days.

Few shots by the Rainier Express lift, this is one of my favorite spots when the snow is good
