This may be a dumb question, but how does everyone prep their body/legs for ski season on here? Cardio, stairs, 2x leg day/week? I'd at least been hiking up until a few weeks ago so that helped with cardio, but man getting back into multiple leg days/week sucks
Also could use some planning help from people on here. Still have Tahoe scheduled for Jan 6-9 but I'm starting to hesitate that they'll have a good snow base/open runs when I'm supposed to go. Would you recommend cancelling and rebooking to later in the season? I'm trying to go skiing nearly every weekend that I can but so far weather patterns seem to be favoring the PNW
And lastly, we have snow here in WA

I have been training for a marathon since mid October so I am hoping my legs aren't too tired. It's definitely the most cardio I've ever done so I am wondering if it will help my legs or hurt them.

I did Tahoe for Christmas 2 years ago and it was outstanding, then last year I did it the first week of February and it was also outstanding. You should be fine for January 6-9.

Crystal was my home mountain when I lived in Seattle. Want to go back some day and do the double black runs I never got to do when I lived there like Exterminator and Powder Bowl.

My secret this year is spending the year living at 9600'. Plus I pick up 100' of elevation gain/loss everytime i walk the dog. Plus all the hiking.
Though I must admit this isnt the most practical solution.
ETA: The beauty of Tahoe is it only takes one good storm off the Pacific to dump 2-3' of snow. This late week storm could well be enough to put them in business.

Responding now after getting a leg day in.
When's the marathon? Had a coworker training for the main one in WA and he took two days off after it was done to just chill. Even on the third day he looked like that baby giraffe learning how to walk. I'd bet the cardio training will help you on the mountains.
Thanks for calming the nerves. I haven't been to that area before, any recs on Heavenly vs Palisades vs Northstar? I'll have 3 days in that area so can hit up each of them or focus on just one mountain. Skill level is mainly blues, blacks, double blacks
Not sure where exterminator is but powder bowl is awesome on a snow dump day. I really like the Left and Right Angle Trees, no one is over there so it's usually untouched powder.

I'd have to go move to near the peak of Mt. Baker or Mt. Rainier to get anywhere near that elevation. I'd bet you and the dog are in pretty good shape already?

I'll do a snow dance but sounds promising. Feel like I could repost that "So you're telling me there's a chance" gif over and over in this thread

I guess this is a good weather question then. Given the jetstream on the last page and some changes to that pattern, do you see certain regions picking up more snow than others over the next few weeks? And yes I know you can't say anything for certain, but general trends would be nice such as between the PNW/British Columbia, CO/UT/NM, CA, and ID/WY/MT. I'm sure tons of people in here have trips planned over Christmas and we don't want them to show up to a dry mountain so now might be the time to change destinations if we see dry patterns upcoming

I snowboard so I do iron chairs between my sets when working out. Also do a lot of core work (mountain climbers, burpees, crunches, leg lifts, etc). I do kettlebell squats on those half round exercise ball things with the platform on one side. This is all in addition to a modified Greyskull program I use. I work out 5-6 days a week.

The dog is a marvel. At this elevation he'll still tire your arm out throwing a frisbee before he'll stop and he's 12. Yeah though, I'm in the best shape I've been in (and as light as I was) since HS.

PNW is the best bet. The jet stream is going to calm down a little bit, and looking at some big picture things it would favor the NW to get cold and precip. ID/WY/MT next, following a storm path that is going to be pinned toward the border.
Northern Utah more hit and miss.
CO/NM really need this next week to be productive I think. There should still be a few disturbances riding in, I suspect they will only be supplying a couple of inches a pop most places. Plus temps are probably going to be a little above average as the SE ridge flexes.
For the NE, it's not looking great as ridging should dominate the east in that two weeks out period and I suspect it ends up holding true for the rest of the year. obvious caveats about how we really don't know shite more than 5 days out, yada yada.
FWIW, Tahoe area still getting multiple feet on operational models through next weekend. I'll check the ensemble members at some point this weekend to get an idea of the spread at resorts.
Nice to do weather thread things when people aren't in danger.
The tl;dr version:

Blue good/red bad.

Damn that's intense. Seems like maybe the iron chairs help the most as thats the most compatible for boarding? 5-6 days a week is more than I can probably commit to, but the crunches, leg lifts, squats are reasonable twice a week I'd think.

Should be a fun late december and early january when I can get out around here, I'm probably aiming for next weekend as my first day at Crystal or Stevens
So UT, CO, and NM are in the not so great forecasts, you don't really see much changing based off that ridge staying around for a while? Hopefully it's gone by christmas week or else there will be lots of upset visitors.

Right? We're in the calm before the storm it feels like. Just waiting on some massive winter snow/ice/sleet storm to hit Chicago, NYC, or Atlanta over a holiday requiring a travel/weather recovery airfare thread on this board

It's more like hit and miss. Taking a big picture view, with a La Nina on that is clearly coupled to the atmosphere you expect the MJO to want to hang out in the Pacific in Phase 6. This and with how tight the jet stream is generally going to want to be up north, southern ridging/northern troughing ought to be the story.
At least for Utah, especially in the north, it will be cold enough for some snowmaking. Well, at least if the ridge is centered over the east vs the northern plains like this week. With a SE ridge vs one right overhead, CO/NM will at least catch some trailing energy off storms and the resorts are located in spots that will get snow off that. Cold enough at night for snowmaking too.
*broad strokes about the future for those reading, not about the storms coming this week*

At some point a clipper is going to roll across and give Chicago the business but let's save that trouble for when it comes huh?

Yes it’s intense but I get up at 4am so the commitment doesn’t really interfere with family or work. I also only really do heavy lifting 3 days a week. The other days are sometimes just a ladder push-up session, so maybe a bit misleading with the 5-6 days a week thing. I’m a huge believer in exercise helping with anxiety, which is something I struggle with so that’s a big reason why I do so much.I’m 43 and in the best shape of my life. I feel like I’m in my 20s again.

Had to look up the MJO acronym, going down a rabbit hole apparently

So essentially we follow the winds/moisture as systems track across the globe and look for oscillations in the jet stream pattern. The ridges and troughs dictate where along the jetstream this energy interacts, thus resulting in drier and wetter regions? Aka we need more rising air? Feel like I'm close to understanding, to think I almost went to Penn State for Meteorology
Agreed, I'll shut up and just enjoy the calm

February 28, I had a 15 mile run today and I am pretty sore. I've learned that the training isn't so much to build your endurance in terms of breathing or cardiovascular efficiency since even after 15 miles I wasn't huffing and puffing at all, but its about building your legs to be able to take 26 miles worth of punishment.

As an Epic holder you can do Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood. My last 2 trips I have done 2 days at Heavenly, and then 1 each at Northstar and Kirkwood. Next time I go to Tahoe I am going to do 2 at Northstar. People hate on it and call it Flatstar since there really isn't any truly challenging terrain and they have no double black runs(although Stampede on Lookout Mountain should be especially when bumped) but when it comes to shredding groomers its a great place. I am an advanced skiier, but the great thing about a place like Northstar is I know I won't be tempted to do stupid shite like I would at Heavenly or Kirkwood. Like, I will go to Heavenly and say "I am a pussy if I don't do this run or cliff in Mott or Killebrew" and sometimes its best not to even put yourself in situations like that.
I went to Northstar last year on a Tuesday in February and NO ONE was there and it was awesome. Heavenly is a good mountain but its prone to shut down for winds. I got lucky last year because the day I went to Kirkwood they shut down pretty much all of Heavenly for winds. Heavenly is outstanding for the views, and the advanced terrain is better than Northstar(but not as good as Kirkwood).
Honestly I would do all 3 mountains. They each have their strengths and weaknesses. I love the Backside of Northstar, and the views of Heavenly. I'd go to Kirkwood over Palisaides because there is no better snow quality you will find in Tahoe and its a great place for black runs and up.

Exterminator runs right under the Rainier Gondola.

I suspect you would have done just fine as a Met.

Booked the first week of February in Breck. Been the last couple years in December and it had plenty snow. Hoping it starts getting some now soon and most runs are open.

Never knew what it was called, but I found that late season this past year and it was awesome. Perfect way to go down for lunch or to end the day, snow is usually untouched because people don't want to go all the way down to the base area in the middle of the day.

Your description sounds a lot more elegant than "We want snow"

For now I'll stick to armchair Met and look at GFS updates for dark blue on the maps. Looks like in the 18z widespread snow over CO and a lot of storms coming from PNW and off the coast of Cali.

I want to hit 30 days of skiing this year, I have a few trips planned and working on a few others. Going to Colorado in a little over a week and then SLC in late January. Will likely make the drive out to Big Sky in February going to hit a up a few resorts in a big roadtrip.

Nice! 30 days is a realistic goal, maybe I'll see you over in big sky. Trying to organize an Idaho and Montana trip late february
I might die doing those, but seems like it catches skiing movements in a quick burst
