I’ll be taking my first international trip in a few weeks and have what is prob a dumb question.

I’m currently booking my flight and one option is to be routed through the likes of O’Hare w/ a 45 min layover (there are other options to layover there for like 2.5hrs or go to SFO instead and have an hr and 10 layover)

Does this give me enough time to deplane my domestic flight up to Chicago and then get through whatever additional security measures and onto the international flight?

I fly a shite ton domestically, but don’t know what all I will have to do for an international flight.

Any help on the above or tips I should know are greatly appreciated.

I would not book a flight with a 45 min layover before an international flight. If your flying get s delayed, you’re SOL and will waste significant time trying to get to your destination.

Give yourself at least 1.5 hrs.

Any flight through Chicago with a 45 minute layover is a gamble.

Not even a good gamble, it’s powerball level.

Have a few Options... Maybe someone in the know can give me advice. Going to Asia

United:
45M layover in Chicago
3hr layover in Chicago
1hr 6m layover in San Fran

AA:
1hr layover in DFW
2hr 41 layover in DFW
2hr 15 layover in LAX

That 2.4 layover in Dallas would be my choice.

I had a 3 hour layover at ORD last month and it was very easy to pass the time. Plenty of time to get to your flight. Lots of food, restaurants, retail...etc.

Many international flights start to board 45 minutes early, sometimes earlier. Remember you are loading 300-400 passengers loaded down with gear. Not a 100 people going on weekend length trips.

If you miss your international flight, you aren’t getting there until the next day.

I’m not conservative on flight times, but yeah I’d rarher get there 2.5 hours early then under 1 hour. Walk around, have a beer, whatever, the extra hour goes by quick.

Plus, you are on vacation. Last thing you want is to be sweating bullets about making your flight on your way to your vacation.

I would take that 3hr layover at ORD. I actually like it there and that gives you plenty of time whether you get delayed or just need a few drinks before that long haul.

I pick a similar connection often myself.

That’s what I’m leaning towards, although i was initially avoiding Chicago in case of snow storm up there.

As far as process, will I have to claim my checked back, transfer to the international terminal and recheck my back?

No. You should be able to check it all the way through to your final destination.

You are supposed to arrive for an international flight at least two hours prior to the flight. 45 minutes is insane.

This is why I wouldn't take ORD for your time period.

Now, if you were arriving back in the US through ORD, I might book it so if a snowstorm happened I just might get an extra day from work and claim there was nothing I could do.

ETA: you might also want to see where your domestic plane is coming FROM before it gets to your airport. For example, I got delayed going to Chicago not because of weather there, but because my plane was coming from Denver and it was too windy to take off to get to me.

But to be fair, shitty weather is an all year phenomenon. Winter just seems worse in how widespread delays get.

What else should I be aware of as a first time international traveler?

Think I’m going through ORD with a 3hr layover going and connecting in SF with a 2.5 layover coming back. Looks like Ill get to check out the new 787 in San Fran.

I’m assuming when I go through security to fly to Chicago ill just show drivers license and then when going through international terminal in Chicago I’ll have to show passport? I really don’t know the process... Then when I land in Asia, I’ll go through customers there and when I land in San Fran coming back I’ll go through customs there? I do have Global Entry.

Basically, but I'd use my passport the whole way. It's a good way to rest assured you have it. Nothing worse than losing track of your passport.

I'm sure you looked up the Visa rules for the Asia countries you are visiting?

HK, no visa requirement.

So you wouldn’t do the 3hr layover in ORD? The only other connection option with over an hour transfer time is Newark. And the overall trip is 3hrs longer.

I'm doing the 2:15 layover at LAX. Especially if that LAX-HKG is a Cathay flight.

Oh your post showed more options. If those are your two then ORD it is.

Ya Cathay is the shite but it sounds like he's down to two options now.

Cathay does have an HKG - ORD flight though.

The airline agent will want to see your passport when you check in for ORD since you are ticketed through to Asia. They likely will give you a boarding pass for the Asia flight too.

Personally, I would connect at LAX just so the flight to Asia wouldn't be as long time wise from there....unless you are flying biz or first class. Sitting in economy seats for over 8 hours is a PITA.....literally.

Yeah, but he was booking the ORD connections via UA (Star Alliance). Cathay is One World (American)
