Would football steaming on ESPN be clearer than cable?

Cable doesn’t have 4K capability right? So the game that’s on ESPN tonight.. would it be clearer streaming through the ESPN app on my 4K firestick?

ESPN's streaming app is notoriously terrible. Unless they have somehow fixed things recently, which I highly doubt.

EVERY ESPN broadcast is in 720p. Streaming it will not result in better clarity on a 4k device.

I think ESPN is 720p along with all the major networks. It looks like arse on a nice huge TV.

Currently the picture quality on ESPN app is much better than YTTV on apple TV 4k devices.

Off topic, but I signed up for the 4K YT subscription to watch the OSU/ND game in 4K. Quickly realized that overall barely any sports get broadcasted in 4K so I plan to cancel.
You think they would all be switching to 4K and promoting the hell out of it.

Fox has a few 4k HDR games every week but you have to watch via the Fox Sports App. You can view these games with a basic YTTV subscription (no 4k addon needed).
Other than that, 4k is severely lacking in quantity.

I’m pretty sure the lsu ark game was flashing in 4k.

Also unlike Fox, ESPN does native 4K broadcasts, which means it's broadcast on site in 4K as well as transmitted to the home in the format. (Fox upscales the on-site 1080p HDR, High Dynamic Range, broadcast to 4K HDR for the home transmission.)Aug 24, 2023
But to answer the OP question. It depends. Mine usually always starts out shitty then adjusts properly. I also don’t have other people bogging down the wifi. You can also run into just issues with the internet dropping out. Basically streaming issues are tied to internet issues.
And this may just be my TVs espn app, but a lot of times when it goes to that graphic screen of your program will return shortly. I have to exit out the game and start it back up because the broadcast will start and be stock on the screen. So you hear it but can’t watch.
Also get ready to hear the same damn few commercials over and over and over again. Mostly selling you pharmaceuticals.
