running server 2022 essentials.

I have it set to automatically download and install updates, but it never does. It is particularly frustrating for security updates, which are almost daily.

Any advice?

Some settings are managed by your organization.

Check Group Policy

No. It's the server for my office, where I run about 8 Windows boxes.

Ok I'll try that thanks

Can also run this from a command prompt.
gpresult /h gpresult.htm

Put c:\whatever\path in front of the file name if you want.

Oh no you use Hyper-V. Yuck.

You need to stop doing auto updates and look into a patch management solution. I use SCCM and Microsoft Intune for patching.

Go open "Run" and type gpedit.

You can also type gpedit from the search bar.

A lot of this will depend on if your current group policies are global group policy or local group policy. Global group policy is usually edited from your domain controller and are meant to be applied to all devices in a specified OU or range.

Sounds like you need an IT guy or MSP.

For 8 boxes? That’s crazy. My lab is bigger than that. Automatic updates is fine as long as he keeps an eye on it.

Dude, he's got a 22 Essentials box and can't even find the GPO console. You are pointing him to SCCM or Intune?!

if this is Essentials, then that means it's the only server...unless there's no domain...in which case GPOs aren't even applicable.

I'd wager the workstations aren't even joined to the domain. If this IS a DC, he needs to not touch it and call someone.

ALTERNATIVELY, there's PatchMyPC which is free for a small number of users i believe...which may be doable.

. All correct Let me take a look at Patchmypc see if it does what I need...

ETA: all I'm trying to do is get it to install Windows Defender updates automatically. Right now it just downloads them...

btw I faced with similar issue, Wanna ask for help one it guy. I use Windows for a long time, Microsoft provides regular updates and feature enhancements, this helps to keep the operating system secure, stable, and up-to-date. Plus I found kms pico download to activate the Windows operating system. It is used for free activation of Microsoft products without the need to purchase official licenses.

Yeah, it is buried in group permissions. IT guy found it for me. Works 100% now.
