Just fishing for opinions here. I have a laptop coming that will have Windows 10 with S Mode installed and what I'm wondering is do you guys think the security is adequate. I know you can disable the S mode and go with the full Windows 10 system but you would need a third party antivirus program for security.

Any thoughts you guys have about that would be appreciated.

I dont know much about S mode but there are lots of good free antivirus programs for Win10. Defender is OK if you are internet savvy and know how to avoid the worst of the net. For those that need/want a bit more protection #1 is Kaspersky free and then some other great alternatives are Avira, Bitdefender and a couple others.

According to the microsoft site, S mode requires you to use Edge browser and that would be a non-starter for me. I use Brave because it is super secure, lightweight and has good integral ad blocking.

This is exactly correct and one of the main reasons I asked my question. I use Brave also and am not too thrilled with having to use Edge. I am leaning towards taking it out of S mode and doing something like you suggest. Thanks

Windows in S Mode is the most secure way to run Windows. The whole point of S Mode is to prevent users from installing harmful software on their PCs. Of course the downside is that users also can't install some legitimate software.

Windows Defender is quite good at this point. Unless you frick around in some very, very dirty pools, it's likely all you need.

I also use Brave, but the latest iteration of Edge is actually a solid browser that can be made pretty secure.

I use Brave so I don't even have to think about it.

It's not about viruses it's about data privacy and ownership. Using a browser like Brave helps a lot. So does using Linux. I personally run Ubuntu the majority of the time (have to use windows for some stuff for work)
