When would it become absolutely necessary to have Gigabit internet speeds at your home?

at most, I would simultaneously have three people steaming video to a device (phone, tablet or apple tv) and another playing xbox (eg, Fortnight on xbox live).
in this scenario, why would you need anything more than 250 mbps?

nobody needs it right now because your local devices can't handle that type of bandwidth anyway.

i do all of that with 50mbps.
only way i see gigabit necessary is in terms of running a home business or something of that nature.

75 to 100 tops

Quality of the router is more important than overall internet connection speed in this type of case. 4k streaming is only 25/Mbps per stream.
MU-MIMO and QoS will have a larger impact on your streaming than even having a 1G connection to the house.

I work from home most of the time, and having the download and upload speeds offered by a Gigabit connection changed my life. I also don't like having "good enough" speeds for download, but that's more a convenience than a need.

well nothing in life is necessary. Your car isnt necessary. Your phone isnt necessary. The A/C in your house isnt necessary.

I do a fair amount of work from home with large data sets, in fact I'm doing that today. 250 is sufficient, and I suspect more than enough now that everyone is moving to Azure, AWS and the like. You don't need a fat pipe if everything is in the cloud and stays there.
BTW, the game is Fortnite, not Fortnight. Don't ban me.

Pretty much this but I know that I have over 30 devices in my home and a lot of them connected ALL the time (Nest cams and such) and when a lot are pulling down and up, it helps to have something greater than 100mbps.

I don’t even understand what people do with that much speed in a residential setting.
I live in an underserved area with shitty service under the criminal organization otherwise known as Centurylink. Their service where I live maxes out at 10 mbps but thanks to a family friend that works for them, I get 25 mbps. I know that sounds like 2008 to a lot of you, but I’m the belle of the ball getting 25 mbps in my area.
We are cord cutters and it is not unusual for one kid to be on the Xbox, another on a high end gaming rig and two or three devices streaming all at the same time. It’s always smooth and no one has any issues even on only 25 mbps shared amongst all of that.
We are a heavy tech house and get along fine with 25 mbps. The only thing I can think of where a bump would be needed is once 4K is fully in play.

Don't need it, but when ATT offered it for less than Xfinity @ 100mbps, why not?
eta. The installer claimed ATT would have 10G service available in our neighborhood by Q4 2018.

I work from home part of the time, and I use it to transfer large data files back and forth, including multi gig virtual hard drives for VM’s.
Honesty upload is more critical for me than download. But largely because cable companies only offer a meager 5-25mbps up, regardless of plan.

It's ridiculous this isn't standard speeds in the states now. A small electric power board in the south was the first to deliver this to their entire residential service area almost 10 years ago now. It's sickening we put up with these companies delivering us garbage in this fake free market.
Now they also need protection from our net neutrality to screw us over even more.
