Pixels are good phones. Personally, I like the galaxy better.

These things can be achieved with industry or open standards rather than proprietary methods. What Apple does is called "vendor lock-in", and from a customer's standpoint it's never a good thing.

I own several Apple devices, and while I do like the ecosystem I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's too costly and you can get other devices that do the same or similar for a fraction of the cost.

Can apple still not text from the computer unless it's an apple computer? That would be the biggest turnoff for me.

I still have a Pixel 2 and love it. Best phone I have ever had, but I'm not sold on the 5.

Do you have faith in that statement for 5-10 years? I’ll stick with iMessage as I know their business model and it’s to sell me devices.

Dumbest statement I’ve ever read. Signal is FOSS. Their business model is not profit. Unlike apple who will sell your arse out the second it starts to make more sense for profit.

iMessage is closed source and could have a back door that you’d never know about.

Most people aren’t paying “a fraction” of the cost of iPhones unless you’re counting 5/7ths or something like that. The Samsung phones are right up there.

I personally want the iPhone 12 mini.

Not sure what wasn't clear but can you text from your windows based computer if you own an iphone? You never could in the past, but I don't keep up with all things apple so maybe they've finally figured out how to do this. That's all I'm asking.

But Google or Samsung couldn’t have a back door in all the proprietary closed source bits that have access to the data on your phone?

Not to mention some of the cheaper Chinese phones with cheap invalidated ARM/SoC, and sometimes questionable linux kernels.

They all could have back doors.

Depends on your threat model.

Using signal is super easy and lots of folks are switching right now.

I've been using it for 3 years already.

Yes, Signal is great. The keys are stored on your device.

Cheap devices are sketchy AF. Android foundation is open source but the downstream end products running on phones sold today are opaque.

Sorry. I see. Never occurred to me anyone owning an iPhone would be on a Windows computer...

J/K.

No I don't believe you can.

So this is what some might call "a bad thing".

I know it's just a personal thing but that's actually pretty significant for me. I'm on my computer 8 hours a day and being able to reply straight from it is not a small thing to me.

It was pretty clutch when you're in an office. You don't look like you're fricking around.
