I have an 55" LG TV that was 10 years old. A few weeks back, the inputs on the back stopped working. So, I got myself a new TV.

So, what to do with the old TV? Do people/companies salvage 10 year old TV's these days or is this thing destined for the dumpster?

I would not donate a broken TV. It's trash. Trash it.

Aren't those boards easily changed and cheap? If so I'd look into getting a new board and use the old TV for an outdoor TV on the back patio.

I'd rather just donate it if it is salvageable

I had a VIZIO 55" plasma that was 10 yrs old and went south. Research confirmed there were 2 boards, so I purchased both refurbished off ebay for $50. Removed the back panel, replaced the boards, and that fixed the problem. I had no clue if it would work 1 day or 100 days. Donated it to a local school with special education kids hoping they could use it.

edit: chicken, post the model # and the tech board sleuths will research the issues, boards, and costs to DIY

there's a T-Con board , and a main power board . T-con is often replaced when the tv powers up, and then goes to a black screen in a few seconds. The main board is replaced if the TV appears dead and you have no power.

prices range from $10 to $60 for each board. Here is where I purchased my parts from. Ebay prices are crazy high and most have no warranty. If you don't want to repair it, donate it to a local school with a shop class that deals with electronics ... best of luck brother

Tv turns on fine. And stays on. It just doesn't recognize inputs. I can get to the system menu and tool around there but it won't recognize hdmi inputs. I tried the VGA input and that also didn't work.

the main board has the inputs. Perhaps swapping out a new board will make it like new again and operational
maybe another poster will have a better diagnosis and opinion.

I had a Samsung Plasma that was playing great. It was my 2nd TV. The board went out and it would stay on. I bought a used board and my daughter is now using it as her main TV. It was really simple. I don't really care what fixing things like that cost. I like to learn and troubleshoot. The board wasn't $100.

Not supposed to put in trash. However, get you a hammer and black trash bag and you’ll be good.

I have about a 9 month old JVC Roku TV that just powered off and won't come back on. JVC hasn't gotten back to me yet on what they are going to do. I've considered looking for a power board on ebay but dangit it is an almost new TV with a warranty I shouldn't have to pay anything.

I have done this with a couple TV's. $50ish probably covers the 2 main boards for most. Google the issue and that can probably narrow it down to the one board that is the problem.

If it's a couple years old and you like it I probably would. The board probably $60 ish? May check ebay for a screen damaged one. Boards usually still good.

Had a friend that had a 65" Sharp Aquaos that got hit by lighting. Insurance bought them and new TV and told them to junk the old one. Asked if I wanted it before they threw it out. I got it and replaced the main board for around $100 and had a fully functioning TV again. It has been working great for a year now.

I would say if you can narrow down the exact part you need and you can fix it for under $150 then it is worth it to fix. Also would recommend storing it for about a year and see if any of the same model pop up on FB Marketplace with a cracked screen you pickup for cheap. You might just luck into getting the parts you need very cheap. If the screen and backlight in the TV's are verified good then it is only a matter of getting a new board either thru marketplace ro ebay then fix it.
