I have a computer that is connected to wifi running games . The router and wifi are downstairs and the computer is upstairs. I am trying to get a faster connection and I am trying to connect via a hard line or someone mentioned a hard wired ethernet port that plugs into an AC outlet an can connect with ethernet through that route. Any recommendations on speeding up the computer in any other way. Was seeing if any could help or make any recommendations.....Thanks

What is your download and upload speed on your PC now?

What really matters is your ping time. Hardwiring is probably not going to do much for you unless you just have god awful wifi

Latency is the critical metric when it comes to games, and nothing will beat a hard wired ethernet cable. I wouldn't recommend the AC powerline adapters. If you're lucky with your wiring it's possible they could perform great if both units are on the same circuit (though I wouldn't count on it on different floors), but more than likely latency won't be much better than wifi and it could be much worse. Might be worth a try though.

Problem is running ethernet floor to floor after the house is built can be tricky depending on the construction and layout. You might end up doing something like running the cable up a wall and through the upper floor (which will most likely involve cutting a hole in the sheetrock on the second floor which you would then patch or cover with a blank plate) into the attic then over and down the wall where your computer is. If you can't DIY, paying someone to do this will cost a bit.

Another option is to get a mesh router. With good placement you can improve your wifi signal/speed/latency on the second floor.

Any recommendations on a specific mesh system?

It's not hard, but it's a PITA...

Yeah, I can't afford to let anymore air out of my skull...

ETA: Oh, and for about the 20th time, I hope to make the last trip up to my attic this weekend...

While this can be true depending on the service the OP has it is certainly not always true or a given.

Powerline adapter. I've used them in the past with good results.

Great rec. I have that one and it works like a charm.

Gotta watch out for phasing issues with PLAs, OP. You may have to move a breaker to the opposite phase in order for the PLA to work.

And if you have a 3-phase panel for some odd reason, beware of the single-pole delta (or stinger) phase. 220VAC coming out of one pole only. You'll let the smoke genies out of everything on that circuit.

Ask me how I know.

In my old place, we used powerline adapters and they worked great vs crappy wifi. I don't think I got over 50Mbps but the connection was solid with minimal latency added and no dropped packets.

This was 6 years ago, I assume the newer powerline models are even better.

Definitely worth a try imo; OP just buy it from somewhere with a good return policy.

This guy seems experienced just enough to stick and click a network cable from wall to computer, yet yall are telling him he may need to swap breakers in main panel and deal with phases….yall got me laughing good…you cheeky bastards!

Or maybe it was me letting someone know it isn't always as easy as "stick and click", and that if the circuit his network gear is on is a different phase than the room he's trying to get access to, a PLA isn't going to be an easy fix.

Who hurt you?
