Long story short, having some issues with a Pioneer in my Jeep. Looking to replace it with something with a touchscreen, that hopefully would allow me to control apps on the phone from the head unit. I mainly listen to satellite radio, so a Pioneer that would connect to my current receiver would be great. But also listen to Spotify and podcasts, and would like to use Waze and have it show up on the screen. Is there anything out there like this that includes all of those features? It has been a while since I looked into replacing a radio since I've had the Jeep 6 years.

you need:

1. unit that allows casting. there are forums discussing this. this allows you to simply cast your phone screen to your head unit and you get 100% FULL FUNCTIONALITY IF.....

2. you buy the little NANNY-STATE workaround thingie (usually like $20 on ebay) that allows you to free your head unit from the ridiculous rules the government puts on radios these days.

3. there is no step 3.

Tell me more about this workaround. Like a USB dongle?

But is that only for video playback? I just want to use Bluetooth to connect my phone and use Waze and Spotify but control it from the radio. And see the waze navigation or Apple maps on the radio.

You need a android radio unit and either add a hotspot or enable hotspot on your phone

Check Amazon for android car radio

If you have an iPhone you can get a cheap Pioneer with CarPlay

It doesn’t support Waze though. You’d have to use Apple maps. It’s pretty good on CarPlay. Check the 4000NEX

Do you have to have the phone plugged in to use car play on the pioneer, like to see text messages and stuff?

That's what I'm curious about. I would prefer it all to work over Bluetooth just for how my vehicle is laid out. I have a plug already in place, a 10 foot USB extender. But it is ran under the carpet and into my console. Would love for it to all just connect through BT when I crank the engine, but I don't know how all of the app features would work over that connection. If not, I'm going to get a dock and just put my phone in there.

There was some talk about Apple updating to work over Bluetooth. If you go to settings>general>carplay it looks for available radios.

It wasn’t live when I had mine and it’s been a few years ago. I would assume the radio needs to be compatible.

Old Ford sync software from 2011 can read texts out loud and stuff via Bluetooth so I would imagine those 3rd party head units can do that and more now.

I was surprised that the huge majority of carplay head units require a connection, I just assumed it was all bluetooth/wifi

They have wireless ones now but they're pretty expensive

My wife's Toyota has that silly system which I can't think of the name and since she has an iPhone I thought it would be way better than the Ford.

Nope. She had to connect it via USB to tether WiFi and use most apps.

What's the point if you have to do all that?

I do like the Toyota BT connection for music and calling. Set it up once and it connects every time I start it up. Still have to use the phone to play whatever, but the calling is nice. Of course it is a 2011 Sienna so nothing fancy, but that BT connection is solid.

It’s called Entune. And you don’t need to be plugged in to use it. You need to download the entune app and sign up and it works over Bluetooth.

not true. you can use *some* of the BT features like hands-free calling & music but yuou can't access any of the HU apps without being connected via USB.

this is in a 2012 toyota so things may have changed but i pulled my hair out trying to get it to tether and finally realized you have to plug it into usb then it 'authorizes' tethering and the built-in apps.

as soon as you pull the usb cable out; those apps and wifi tethering stop working.

Bump. Installed a Pioneer AVH-1300NEX last night.
It's awesome. Love the app features. Just need a new XM receiver/tuner as my old one doesn't connect.

Can you use maps like Waze or Apple maps and listen to Spotify at the same time?

Do you have the Entune app on the phone? I have a 2012 and never use a USB cable, but I have always had Android phones.
