I am about to start building a house and i recently learned the google wifi a will pause wifi and block certain websites. Is the google wifi a good choice or is there something else out there better?

i use the parental controls built into my asus router. seems to work pretty well; you can filter porn, torrent sites, etc. and you have lots of control to tweak which types of sites you want to provide access to.

I use my router to only allow certain websites on my son's computer, which is a custom PC I built myself, but now it's pretty much his.

Have your home wired for ethernet. Use wired connections whenever possible. Use wired access points for WiFi. Mesh systems are the last resort when ethernet is not possible.
I think most consumer routers (even the cheap ISP routers) support scheduled internet access. And all of them can be configured to use a DNS filtering service like OpenDNS Family shield.

My kid isn't old enough to get on the internet yet...but I've already snagged an old physical firewall from work. Its a Dell Sonicwall....best firewall on the market.
Another option is to configure your DNS settings on router to allow a DNS content filtering service.....like "Open DNS Family Shield" or configure the DNS settings in your iPv4 settings.
You will want to add 2 DNS server addresses:
208.67.222.123
208.67.220.123
