Fried a whole heap of things.

The entertainment center in the living room is completely fried. Everything plugged into that surge protector is toast. 70 inch sharp 4k tv, tablo, blue ray, fire TV all gone.

Fried a bunch of lights, baby monitors, wyze cameras, another TV in the basement.

Likely going on homeowners insurance but if you had to replace your main viewing 70 inch TV today what would you get?

Do you really like your current TV? Does it come on, make noise, anything like tht?

My house was struck about 5 years ago. Insurance paid for replacement of everything, but I had my TV repaired instead. Had to replace the main board (paid a repair guy, but it’s easy DIY too), and it’s worked fine for the last 5 years. Just another option to consider.

Some rca one I got a few years back. I doubt it will warranty the stuff.

The Belkin surge protector in the basement operated fine. I'm guessing I should go ahead and replace them all.

It blew the screws out of all my LED bulbs

ETA: I hate it damaged so much stuff cause I think lightning is cool as hell. You could actually follow it through the house into the ground with the breakers it tripped. Cool stuff.

Yes. Your surge protectors should all be replaced.

Just a little FYI... Surge protectors are just that - they protect from small spikes and fluctuations in the line voltage. They do almost nothing against a lightning strike.

I have seen some heavy duty lightning protection equipment - those are only called lightning "suppressors" - because as one engineer said..."Lightning goes through what it wants to go through."

The current in a lightning strike is too high to be stopped by a little capacitor in your surge protector.

A little more info

Surge suppressors? Lightning? You just activated the bat signal. Let’s see if he’s listening...

Got the total from homeowners, $3,200 of damage.

Ouch...

Vizio 75 inch at costco

Last years TCL 75 inch at costco

Either of these worth a flip at that price?

Update.

We found where it hit. Things got a lot more expensive.

Hole in the roof, some wires melted. Not good at all.

Is that your ACV settlement or Replacement Cost?

That was the replacement cost of the electronics it killed.

It also killed the electric motors in the couch for the recliners. The couch, hole in the roof, and wires that need to be replaced will drive that $3,200 a bit higher.

Couch was $2,200 got a quote for 1k to repair the roof. Still trying to get an electrician out to see the cost of a full inspection and replacing 2 wires. The way the house is wired, the 2 wires it hit control the lights to all 3.5 bathrooms

Wife = not happy.

ETA: Anyone have a clue what it's going to cost to rip out 2 different wires and rerun them? They should have to pull out drywall to get to them right?

That is a super easy repair on the roof I'm not even handy, maybe negatively handy if that makes sense, and have repaired two holes in my roof. If you cone out of pocket don't pat someone. You can fix that for less than a hunnit

I keep finding fricking shingles in my yard. I'm hoping its from that one hole, but I found one on the complete other side of the yard. Now I'm wondering if there is more damage.

This sucks so much.
