To do it well you are gonna spend a bit of coin.

Does that mean the HDMI sync from Hue is the best?

You will need:

Hue Light Strip -- $220
HDMI Sync Box -- $230
Hue Bridge -- $60

Total -- $510

There is a DIY method using ~$150 in parts, but it's pretty involved and takes a lot of time and is not as sleek (though the effect is likely pretty similar).

Just bought the kit because of this thread.
Will report back next week when it arrives.
Merry Christmas to me!

Still can't believe Philips is the only one with this built into their TV's.

everyone still feels burned from the 3D tv gimmick and curved TVs

anyone still rocking a 3D tv? that was about 60% of the best buy inventory a few years back.

my question with the Hue setup is will it distort the picture quality. I know it says it doesn't but could it downgrade the quality running into another source and then out again?

Edit to simple “no”

Sadly Philips makes great TV's and we can't get them in the States.

Their OLED's are solid and have ambilight built in. LINK

I mean, yeah, but "put some kind of light behind your TV if you're going to watch anything in the dark" has kind of been the advice for decades. Crazy controlled rgb is gimicky, but I would definitely give preference to a TV with some basic, brightness adjustable lights on the back.

A lot of people say this, but I strongly disagree. I'm sure it's subjective and personal preference, but for me the ambilight style of backlighting really adds a lot to the experience.

More than just eye strain relief, it gives a sense of being more immersed in the "world" that you're watching. Your eyes have a very small window where the image is in focus, and everything else is blurry but your brain fills in the details. Projecting the screen's edge colors out seems to give your brain (well mine, at least) a palette of colors to help build a bigger mental picture. Just like real life.

You forget that you're watching a screen, almost as if you're watching in person. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but for me at least it's quite a letdown if I turn the lights off.

I'm open to the new experience, and may stand corrected on that day
