Plus, a widget is going to reduce the amount of home screen real estate I have more my most used apps.

Yeah, I don't have a single app icon on any of my home screens, it's all widgets. I keep my often used apps in 4 categorized folders on my home row so they are always 2 taps away, and lesser-used apps are always in the app drawer.

Here's what still vexes me about iOS - notifications.

After 7 years and a complete redesign of iOS, Apple still can't figure it out. Whenever one receives a new message, the top portion of the screen becomes unusable for ~3 seconds while the notification is displayed, which effectively prevents the user from actually using any of the contextual controls within an app.

You can reach up and swipe it away, but this becomes tedious after a very short period of time.

I've used plenty of iOS and Win phone 8 and I have to say the tiles are cool but way overrated.
Also, the settings and non-tile parts of the Win Phone 8 are cluttered which makes settings navigation difficult.

Oh, and did I mention Win Phone 8 has gone seemingly a millennium without a real patch?

Twitter and other websites images will load incorrectly and I've had this phone for around a whole year. (nokia lumia 928)

A bigger gripe for me about notifications is they stay in the notification shade after you check it.

I think this is how I would have to do it if/when I get another android phone. Having widgets and apps on my first page just didn't work for me.

I actually had a Droid Incredible before my iPhone and honestly I just don't think there's a comparison. My droid's battery was trash within a year and it crashed constantly. I probably could have kept my 4S for three years instead of two (which my wife still has hers) and it run just fine. I think that in general is why I enjoy Apple products more. The design seems to be so much cleaner, the interface tighter, and while they do update their product line every year, their products still work without a hitch for years.

Time to look again. That was 4 years ago. The Android flagships are good and the OS is better than ever.

iOS needs a refresh for sure. I don't want windows tiles. they are lame.

I have used android phones, and they are slick. but I am hesitant to switch, simply b.c of my wife. if I switch to android, she won't know how to use my phone. And that will annoy the shite out of me. She can barely use her iphone as it is.

I feel your pain. GF has had iPhones for at least 5-6 years, can't do anything with it except instagram and take pictures.

It's really not complicated. I haven't looked back since switching. Ios would need a major overhaul for me to even consider it.

palmOS

I wish Palm hadn't collapsed like it did. Inventors of the App Store (albeit web based), had some of the first popular PDAs, some of the first docks/cradles, had removable storage on the device, fully configurable/compliant mobile mail client that could open just about any attachment type (beat the hell out of Blackberry without a BES at this), could sync over wifi...and this is all before the original iPhone had even been announced. I was upset when they moved to WebOS and then sold to HP. I was a huge fan of PalmOS and the early WinMobile, Palm-modified OS devices.

AND the battery would last 2 days of heavy use, was cheap enough to buy a dock with spare battery charger when (after years of abuse) the charging port started to fail.

Now get off my lawn.

Had android for three years......widgets are the biggest waste of space and battery.....never used them. Also my incredible was the biggest pos I ever owned. iPhone 5 has worked flawlessly for almost two years.

Yeah having a complete and total sync across my phone, tablet, computer, and Apple TV is so terrible. Being able to download an album on my computer and it immediately being able to play through my home surround sound, phone, or tablet is useless. Don't even get me started on photo streams basically having an automatic update from my camera across all devices.

The blind hate is absurd.

What do you mean by "complete and total sync"?

Google Music with Chromecast does this pretty easily.

G+ auto photo backup does the same. And Auto-Awesome really is pretty awesome.

because who the hell sepnds so much time on a damn homescreen. You open an app and do what you need to do. The only thing that would be of great value if the phone being able to give info when you ask without touching a button like the MotoX tried to do.

Calendars, pictures, contacts, music, email, synced across at least three devices natively. I'm sure android phones and system can do it, but it's just not part of a native ecosystem.

I mean that's great and all, I'm just saying I can take a picture from my phone and without me doing anything it's immediately on four other devices. That goes for pictures, calendars, music, and anything else. Like I said, I'm sure android may have a feature that does that as well, but I just like the way Apple has designed it more. It's just way cleaner and smoother in general and I place a priority on that.

I should have known this board was basically just going to be a Droid vs Apple battleground. Which is completely unnecessary. Having owned both, I've just come to appreciate the way one designs their overall product more. I don't know why that's a bad thing. You guys who always say "oh well android does that too" I mean, well, that's great. But that's not gonna make me switch from a near perfect setup.

The only thing they do better IMO is make the native stuff a little smoother.

Yeah, the stock UI on most androids is a little disappointing, but rooting fixes that.

But it is, it's all google.

Same here. As soon as (well, at least within seconds or minutes) I take a photo on my phone, I can access it on my tablet, computer, or any device that can log into my google account. Same with calendars, add an event on any device, it shows up on every device, and my phone notifies me when it's time to start heading to the event. When my wife adds an event to our shared calendar, my phone still tells me when it's time to leave, and offers to map the trip with one click. It's all really seamless. Same with Music.. I buy a song, it's playable anywhere. Also, any time I search for a place on my desktop, my phone immediately offers to map a route to it, no extra steps.

How do you know?

Was your last Android an Incredible? That might explain why you think Google's "ecosystem" is clunky in comparison. A lot has changed in 4 years, and the whole experience has gotten really, really smooth.
