Thanks, The Verge, for doing your best to frick legal private streaming up for everyone. No mention of ripping your own DVDs and Blurays. No mention of LiveTV DVR. Talk about a hit piece.

It really is a hit piece. Not only do they highlight things it does that are completely legal, like the OTA DVR, they even mention the piracy angle is pretty limited.
In the long standing debate between Roku or Fire TV, easy access to illegal streaming (Kodi) is often a deciding factor. Both platforms have Plex, only Fire TV has Kodi. Most people that read that article and think Plex is the way to easy piracy are going to be sorely disappointed.

Her forum’s Plex contingent, which is maintained by a few people with servers in their houses, only very rarely gave out these coveted invites.

Meh, I don't really see this threatening Plex in any way.

I have always been curious about plex seeing cad and some others around here use it. I would like to try it out but I dont have any movies downloaded. Is any other way to watch movies besides having them stored on a hard drive? I use cyberflix and I feel I'm pretty techy but when I read the how to on plex it always confuses me when it gets to the torrent stuff so I never follow thru.

The whole point of Plex is to stream your own media. So if you don't have any media, Plex really isn't purposed for you.
People can share their servers with other users, though, so you can bug someone to let you use theirs. Because this requires server power/bandwidth, I only lend this access to close friends and those who are willing to reciprocate by giving me access to their library too.
You could buy your way onto servers too, but I'm pretty sure Plex bans users/servers if this activity is caught.

They dont, they just drop the share, accounts stay intact and other shares remain. I pay for a service, it got dropped once. I was back up with a new share in an hour. My server provider also gives EMBY shares to alleviate potential drops.

Plex is a hidden gem in the media world and the verge just needs to go write some other boring articles.

Looked around yesterday for a pay server didn't have any luck could you lead me in the right direction. I saw some on reddit but couldn't tell of trustworthy or not. I would like to try it out just to see the video quality. I've read that plex quality is a lot better than things like kodi and cyberflix. Just bought new vizio p series so just having fun watching good quality movies.

Nobody tell them about Real Debrid.
Seriously - any of you folks tip off The Verge about Real Debrid, I'm coming to your house.
(J/K ... but I'm serious.)

Most do PayPal so not a huge deal. Titan and goplex are ones I have used. Content quality just depends on their downloads. They get updated all the time as well. So a lesser quality copy might get replaced with a better copy. Pretty much any show on tv is there and most movies you have ever heard of. If there is something you want that’s not there just ask and it’s usually downloaded within a day. We use plex/emby and Netflix as our main content providers. The servers are not comparable to Netflix as far as ease of use getting better quality across the board but they more than make up for it with content. Nothing too crazy new but fairly new stuff. For example latest movies on my paid server are the new men in black, brightburn, John wick 3, Pokémon, avengers, hell boy, etc...

I have only family on my Plex server. Maybe 4 people have it outside my immediate family. I would probably share with more, but since my ShieldTV is my server, I can't put that much demand on it.

How is sharing a server with your content with others any different than pirating?
Someone is still consuming the content without paying the appropriate party.
(I am a big fan of illegal streaming so I am not knocking Plex, I just find it odd that anyone would pretend the main purpose of Plex is something other than to be able to watch content you did not pay for)

This is no different than Pirate Bay or the glory days of Mega Upload.
Not sure why anyone would pretend this is not piracy.

quote:Where the media comes from is of no concern to Plex, but the "main purpose" of Plex certainly is not for pirating content. It doesn't even have a function to download content at all! Plex is a media player and media server, and variations of this type of software have been around since computers have been powerful enough to play video. Windows Media Player, for example -- is its main purpose for watching illegal content? How about VLC? Or your web browser? Or any of the hundreds of other programs that play video? No, they're just for playing videos.
I just find it odd that anyone would pretend the main purpose of Plex is something other than to be able to watch content you did not pay for
And the server part of it is essentially a glorified filesystem (a huge oversimplification, but it still fits). It just makes it more convenient to choose a video to watch rather than browsing a basic filesystem.
Can Plex be used to watch illegal content? Certainly, but so can any media software ever written. So I find it odd that you are singling out Plex as a media player for pirates. I'm not going to lie and say that I don't have any pirated content on my Plex server, but I also have a huge library of (legally) ripped CDs, (legally) ripped movies, (legally) recorded shows from OTA TV, and obviously legal personally recorded videos and photos.

Do you feel the same way when your local library shares Blu-ray disks with you?
What about when you let your friends borrow your DVDs?
Is sharing that digitally somehow more pirate-y than loaning them a plastic disk?
Someone's movie collection streaming through a 3 year old PC in their basement on a consumer internet connection isn't going to create too much havoc in the industry.
