Please share some of the funny and/or sad tech related tales you have heard or experienced.
I have been dumbfounded about something that happened last week.
We've had a re-shuffling of top executives and software dev people at our parent company. My middle manager said she didn't mention one of the software programs we use daily to that team because "they don't like open source software".
Our whole company and software stack is built on things like:
.net
angular
nodejs
git
wordpress
mysql
etc...
I may need to go into construction or welding.

Worked at a large regional accounting firm. Had one of the secretaries comes into the IT office saying her iphone had gotten water in it and she needed help getting it out. I said we could order her another since it was done if it had water inside the case, but she said it was still working.
Checked it out and sure enough, worked perfectly...and had no sign of water. Then I noticed the wallpaper was that old blue water droplet one. I thought surely not, but surely enough. Bear in mind she probably had that same wallpaper the entire time she had the phone and had just noticed it, but failed to notice the water droplets never moved

Worked for gateway in the 90's. Stories for days! The disc drives aka cup holders would break all the time. Folks bringing in their coffee cup/mug showing what happens.
That along with the disc not staying in position? Slip out of the tray when closing.....the whole computer was upside down...

Plumbing, electrical, or HVAC. Why shouldn't we continuously run this script against prod databases? (Nobody is listening, commence help desk tickets.)
The point of the trades isn't to pull your own wire, but to own trucks where you have other people pull wire for your company. A guy that fixed my shitter in 199x? in the dorm made more than I did when I got a job as a VPN specialist ($30/hr in 2000).
Back on topic, I made the mistake of trusting the labeling in a cabinet on power cables in my first two weeks on the job. When I pulled the power cable for SQL0117, I actually pulled the power from the switch for the entire entire cabinet, around 1000.
I also didn't know applying a patch to MS SQL would stop the service, and kill all DB connections (again, in the middle of the day), but I did it.
Learning experiences, among many. There is actually a fun series on the Register that covers stuff like this here.

They must be hurting for quality people though. The last few times I used a plumbing and HVAC service they sent kids out who had to call in back-up each time.

Perfect. I've been reading the register lately but hadn't seen this series.

Not all company owners can be leaders. Leaders have to know when there is risk (this job involves cleaning X) or (I'm going to teach you how to replace the damper control board). Leaders have to know what kind of person is which. Find companies that have the right leaders. But also acknowledge that some peeps need to learn.
I've worked with some really, really, really shitty leaders. And some good ones; people that if they pinged me on LinkedIn, I'd quit my current job immediately. But how hard to do you think, as a 40+ year old, to anticipate what a 26 year old is going to do, or where their phone is going to end up overnight (somehow, there was massively stupid shite that went on with someone's phone, that shouldn't be possible.) (ETA:, the phone was apparently, but inexplicably, thrown through) Multiple walls, as reported. Plumbing, electrical, framing, and 4 sheet of drywall, lol. I'm sure he was high.

Worked for a desktop support company here in BR. We had a hurricane heading toward the area and checked on our clients. Made sure everyone had backups and plans in place. For most the plan was to shut down - raise things up off the floor in case of flooding, and generally protect things.
After the hurricane, had a company call and say none of their PCs would turn on. Figuring some kind of power issue, we head over to check it out.
Turns out they were afraid the roof would leak, so they covered all the PCs with trash bags - but didn’t turn any of them off first…
Had to replace about 20 power supplies - luckily those died before motherboards.

I got knocked unconscious for a few seconds while installing DSL. It was raining, I was standing in a puddle/mud and my feet were wet. The back of my hand brushed the phone terminals *just* as a call came in. The voltage isn't supposed to be much more than annoying in normal circumstances, but next thing I know I'm looking at the sky, but I never hit the ground. Don't know how. I could probably find that lawyer's office today, and this was more than 20 years ago.

Duh, should have poked holes in the trash bags.

What is the voltage?
I worked with an electrician for a while during my college years. Never got burned myself but he had a couple interesting stories.

I think it was supposed to be limited to 12v. I'd been stung, in an annoying way, a few times before. That time was stunning. Pun intended.

Memory says the ring voltage on a POTS line is around 90 VAC @ < 10ma, annoying most of the time but under the right circumstances it could zap you a bit.

Back during the windows 95 days, the bootup splash logo was just a jpg. A buddy at work who was not computer savvy left his computer unlocked over lunch. I went into MS paint, reversed the image and placed it in the whatever boot directory was. I then shut down his computer. He freaked out and thought he'd broken it when he booted it back up. When the IT guy came to fix it, I had to fess up as to what I'd done.
Seems like I also took a screenshot of his desktop and replaced his wall paper. I then moved all his desktop icons to a temp folder on his hard drive. When he couldn't open any programs, he called IT on that one too.

In the 2000/XP days, I learned how to ctrl+alt-direction screens and would walk around the office turnings computers left, right, and upside down when I was bored. Fortunately, I was the help desk, and most the users had a sense of humor.
