Hopefully it's not stuck in 2018 either
what does that have to do with the topic. But if you want to go there. Apple supports Communist China and probably sells them your data.

Please don't act like Google/Android is much better.

Well a lot if you follow the thread, but you should read the article a little bit more clearly. It wasn't google reading your text messages, it was every app on your phone.

OnePlus has been observed to send personalized data to Chinese servers about everything going on on the phone (outside of what each other app was reading/sending).

All of this bullshite surrounding data and privacy drove me to grapheneOS but slowly, over time, all of the convenience apps have crawled their way back on. Need a purge.

I go back and forth to caring vs not what’s happening with all of my data.
We are being listened to and tracked on our own devices. But it isn’t terribly hard to be tracked and tagged across devices (audio recordings), and there are microphones on nearly every surface of the earth at this point.
I don’t particularly enjoy that it is where we are. But I don’t really have anything worth hiding, either. So I figure that I may as well enjoy the spoils.

And then other times I also want to shut it all down. Depends on the week.

Yeah, I do the same. I want to care but to actually break free from it is very difficult and time consuming..and a constant battle. So I just work to reduce my data footprint where most convenient.

I use Linux for my daily driver PC and FOSS alternatives. Proton.me for email. Brave browser. Etc.

But i still have Alexas all over my house.

Yeah at this point arguing google vs Apple is just dumb if you actually care about privacy or China. The only real solution is going back to dumb phones and even then it may still be sending shite. Might as well go back to land line, lol.

Does apple even release their iOS code?

I'm not talking apps/programs, I mean the operating system code.

If Apple is recording/data basing your information, it will be directly form the OS and not an app.

Apple claims they aren't, but there's no real way to ever know.

I can't imagine Apple letting this happen. It would be an uphill battle, Apple could do the smallest of tweets to software and probably break this app when they feel like it.

For those questioning the good of iMessage it is how seamless it integrates with all of their products. You can message on a iphone, ipad, macbook or even an old ipod and it just works seamlessly. Every messaging app I have tried to read and reply to text messages on my PC or Samsung Tablet SUCKS. In a lab environment where I can't have a phone having iMessage on a computer would be great for me
this. Sometimes I use WhatsApp. Well, they don’t have an app for tablets. It’s my phone or nada.

Google messages can be used on any android device (tablets included) or PC. No, iMessage is not unique in that functionality.

In fact Google messages probably works on a wider array of devices.

Started testing it this afternoon. Was successful sending imessage to some of my iphone friends.

But I just ran into an issue just now where they aren't sending. SMS working fine still through the app. Going to work with engineering tomorrow to figure out the issue.
