I just got an email from Elon saying my area will have Starlink availability in the coming months. I thought they were still in the beta testing stages?

Is it though? I feel like for most people in this day n age, $499 for what you're getting where you live and how vital internet is today, isn't too bad. Expensive yeah, but still well worth it for most.

Not for people like me who have basically no other option. I’m running Verizon LTE and nothing else.

Not as rough as paying month after month for the terrible service offered by geosync satellite providers.

I’m in queue to pay them $500. Well, $400 since I’ve already paid $100. Based on their Reddit thread, it looks like most of their satellites are covering the northern half of the US / southern side of Canada. Lots of folks setting up in Ohio, Michigan, Oregon. I’d imagine south LA will be covered within a year at their current pace—although they have said second half of 2021.

For me it’s a godsend. Our only hsia option is LTE, and although it works, it’s flaky as frick. Assuming Starlink can provide a stable 100 meg link with reasonable ping times, I’ll gladly give them $100/month.

I've seen reviews by people up north and their speed tests range from ~25mbit to ~150+, even in back to back tests. Pings vary similarly. Still miles better than geosync satellite service, and I would expect it to get better.

I am very optimistic that Starlink will be a game-changer for a lot of rural people and travelers etc., and also it could be a good option for redundancy at a lot of businesses.

I think they have just over 1,000 satellites up already, and I've seen plans for 12k or even 40k+, so service and capacity will surely improve. I just wonder how it's going to scale in terms of service/speed/reliability as the number of subs increases. I think they just crossed 10k subs, which is 10 users per satellite on average. Not many! I'm curious whether that ratio will get much better. I'm optimistic though.

I was surprised at the time frame. As many others have, I went ahead and paid what they asked and now it’s just a waiting game. Early results from people that participated in the beta look great.

Hang on, don't you have a stationary LTE modem/router?

The only thing Verizon offered was this little jet pack POS that wasn’t any better.

I run dual-wan at home - cable (150mbps) and dsl (25mbps). I signed up for Starlink and paid my $100 last week for service just NW of Houston.

Planning to replace either cable or dsl with this, so I can have something that isn’t reliant on a cable buried in the ground.

My current ISP provider cost me 105 dollars a month for 12mb download speed which I rarely get. I contacted him to find out what’s the latest and possible future technology that will increase our speeds. He is a friend of mine that owns the company and our daughters go to school together. I informed him that I put down my deposit for the Starlink system. He told me that they won a government bid to expand fiber to my area and that they had 6 years to make the project happen and the locations where they would expand to first would be based on financial return. I can’t possibly wait 6 years for this to happen.

Has anyone else heard of this government initiative to take fiber to the rural areas and has anyone else contacted their slow ISP companies to see if they are doing something similar in their area?

There was a government initiative to do something similar years ago, and what happened is the ISPs pocketed the money and never built out their networks.

100 mbps current speed is only with some of the network up. Elon said on Joe Rogan recently they plan for 1 gbps speeds and less than 20 ms.

I’ve heard similar stories yea, basically at&t or other big boys run high density fiber lines along all state and local highways

Then any regular joe can start an “isp” with a government grant to buy access off the main trunks to take it the last few miles

I wonder how well it will work in ice and snow, as well as downpouring rain?
