Wife and I full timed in an RV that we gutted and reno’d for a little over a year starting in late 2019. We sold the RV and bought and are currently building out a Transit High Roof EL.

In the RV, we used a cellular router with both a T-Mobile and ATT sim; both are unthrottled and uncapped through a third party service. Router switched automatically to whichever had better signal. We also used a WeBoost and never really had any issues no matter where we were.

I signed up with interest to be part of Starlink’s beta program a few months ago and received an email this morning that there’s availability now to join.

Has anyone had experience with Starlink yet? Either positive or negative? My wife and I both work in IT so Internet is crucial for us. Hence my fear of joining a beta service.

Have they allowed moving the dish yet? I know at first it could only be used at the registered address. They do plan to allow moving around, but I thought that would happen once coverage was better in more places.

Also the dishes can use 100 watts or so, likely much more than your cell modem. Something to be aware of.

This is actually a good question and I’m not aware of the answer. I’ll do some more research to confirm.

Not really a concern, but thank you for mentioning! We’re currently running 900ah of LifePo4 and a 3000w Xantrex inverter so it’s not too worrisome. Plenty of reserve we can use.

I havent experienced it but I've been watching reviews on Starlink and it's pretty awesome. 100+Mb down, 50ms latency. Incredible for satellite. However, it's still fairly unstable due to lack of satellites. It will just drop out for a while, and sometimes the router needs to be rebooted too.

If you have no other choice, it's miles ahead of other satellite internet options. It is probably currently not better than LTE unless you have terrible LTE reception in a given area (many state parks, for example), but as they add satellites and the service becomes more stable and more refined, it'll probably become a go-to for campers, tailgaters, boats, and people who live in the sticks or mountainous terrain.

I read up about this recently and on their FAQ it specifically states that the dish gets it's signal based on a quadrant it's assigned, and if the dish leaves that quadrant it will no longer get a signal. AKA you can't move it very far and would likely not work for traveling in an RV.

Whoa they sent me an email just now saying it's available here!

Starlink still has downtime periods. Really depends where you are, though.

I ordered mine a few weeks ago, but it will be a few months before they get enough coverage this far south to ship me my stuff. Would be awesome to have for tailgating in the RV, I hope it will work that “far” away from my address. I only live a few miles from campus.

Anyone know what the total monthly fees will be? I saw $99/mo, but I just got signed up with Att fixed wireless and the $69.99/mo is actually $100.34 with “at&t fees” and government taxes.

I've seen reports of actual bills being $99 flat, at least in the northwest.

AT&T, Cox, etc can suck a fat dick with all of the hidden unadvertised fees.

That $500 hardware fee is hefty.

It is, and of course $99 is pricey too.

For the price and current limitations I see two target markets: those with only shite for other options, and businesses that might want some redundancy or additional capacity.

Once they open up the location restrictions, the traveler market like OP here opens up, and probably also ships/yachts/etc.

Then I would expect the pricing to come down once they have enough subscribers. That's Musk's usual MO, at least.

You definitely can’t move it from the primary location. At least not yet. Apparently that will be a modification added in the future.

Yeah that will be huge. RV people will be all over it, even the hardcore tailgaters.

Yeah they're going to have to boost capacity over BR when everybody starts trying to stream on gameday.

I just want my setup that I reserved earlier in the year.
I see it says 2nd half of the year for those.

I'll have to tell my parents about this. They go camping a lot and actually live in their camper since their house got completely gutted after Laura. Haven't even started on the rebuild yet.

They could use this a lot.

My dish should be here Monday. Not sure when I will be able to set it up though. Remodeling a house with no viable internet options. Thought it wiukd be longer before I got the beta invite. Likely won't move until end of June or so. Guess I can set it up and get my security cameras running off of it.
