Searched and only found 1 thread in the last couple months with not a ton of info.

Anyway, I’ve never had a sound bar but want to get myself one for Christmas. Most of what I’ve heard is that the $250 vizio 5.1 bar with the sub and speakers is the way to go.

However, I’ve always been a Bose guy and went to Best Buy today to just check out the selection and the Bose TV speaker and Bose smart sound bar 300 both got my interest but neither come with a sub.

Is a sub totally necessary? And should I go with the vizio over the Bose?

The only true way to get 5.1 is to actually have 5.1

Bose >>>>> Vizio

Yes you want a Subwoofer.

I have a Sonos sound bar with no other speakers and no sub and it sounds great. This is in my living room, big open room connected to the kitchen/dining area.

Not saying you need a Sonos but just an example that the surrounds/sub aren’t needed.

You can get good sound from a sound bar.

You can't get good surround sound from a sound bar.

You can't get full range sound with a sound bar and no subwoofer.

Sub makes a huge difference. If i had to pick, i would choose a 2.1 with a sub over surround sound with no sub

I would bet good money that if you heard that same system paired with a sub, even a lower level one like what comes with sound bars, you'd change your mind on that.

Yeah you can't really fake the sound and feeling of a sub. Size does matter (when it comes to speakers!)

I bought a nice sound bar and sub for FIL. He says the bass from the sub makes the TV hard to understand. So, it sits in a corner with a plant on top. Sheeesh.

After a ton of research, I think I’m going with the Bose smart Sound bar 300 by itself for now and down the line I’ll buy the subwoofer that Bose makes because apparently you can’t use a different kind

Imma piggyback off this to get recs on a super basic soundbar. I just want something that isn't the shitty rear facing speakers on my bedroom TV. It mostly just gets used at night so I don't need a sub or anything fancy. I just want something that will clarify dialogue better. Right now I just have a single roku remote for operating it and TV. I don't want to manage soundbar volume separately, I want to just keep using the same remote and adjust TV volume to adjust soundbar. I guess that would mean the soundbar would need some kind of standby when the source is off. I've thought about just picking up some basic PC speakers but I don't think they'd pass the wife test.

That sounds really weird. I'd confirm that, because just about any other sub will be better than Bose.

Klipsch and Polk both make decent offerings in the $100-$200 range.

Bose has always had proprietary stuff. It's one of the many reasons I wouldn't purchase Bose.

Most active sound bars are like that, at least the ones I’ve dealt with, Bose, Polk, Denon, Sonos, Def Tech, Savant. Most of the lower end ones are even packaged with the sub.

I personally think the Bose sound bar sounds good. Especially for movies. I wish they never would have moved away from the Soundtouch amps to match with them, but someone in a board room decided they need to rework the entire line just to have native Alexa integration.
