i just don't see how that's different than what a $35 chromecast audio does.
hell i dont understand what you are asking. for a chrome cast to work it needs a receiver to power the speaker.

yeah. But CAD was saying one of the big advantages of Sonos is being able to group audio. That's not really new tech though. If you have a receiver a $35 chromecast audio does the same thing.

Or you could buy a receiver and a chromecast audio for the price of a play 5.

You are only putting 1 speaker in an entire room? I assumed for a living room you would be putting 5 speakers in there. Like a normal 5.1 setup.

i was comparing this to the cost on an AVR. were you assuming speakers were included in that $1500?

i thought you were saying that was the cost for just the multi-zone avr itself?

you have to go select the chromecast hdmi input on each device first right? that alone makes this a non-starter for my household

it was top of the line but yes it was $1500 for just the AVR.

But then you stated you could buy 5 speakers and cover 4 rooms with that. And that confused me. Especially since 4 posts ago you said you dont like in-ceiling speakers.

You don't like in-ceiling speakers but you are ok with 1 speaker covering an entire room?

*sigh*

a play5 will take care of a large living room.

2 play3 (configured as stereo) will take care of a large screened porch

play1s are fine for smaller bedrooms. are you implying you have multiple speakers in your kids' rooms or guest bedroom now?

eta i never said i was setting up 4 5.1 surround rooms. i'm just talking having PLENTY of sound to fill the rooms i mentioned above.

you are 100% correct i'm not talking about TV stuff in this.

yeah, im sorry but i have my doubts. It may be loud enough but no way it's good enough to cover a large living room.

That's like saying a great soundbar can replace a 5.1 setup.

absolutely depends on the room configuration and use.

i'm not throwing dance parties in my living room so a 5 is P L E N T Y .

2 play3s are perfect for the screened porch where we will get a little more rowdy

no. i already have a vizio soundbar + sub in the sunken den, where the TV is.

the living room by design has NO TV. its literally for reading, listening to music and chilling with friends.

Bose already has a system. I prefer their app and the hard buttons on the speakers. Their bar sounds better than SONOS.

There is also HEOS out there too.

I think some of you are missing the point on how an AVR is used in many homes. Plenty of people add a SONOS connect to their AVR.

You get what you pay for buddy. The Lutron shades are top notch, granted you aren't the target customer for them.

Doesn't look like another new alternative has been mentioned yet. Numerous manufacturers have made agreements to support the playfi tech. Very similar to Sonos but not tied to one manufacturer. Think apple vs android.

Here is a link to the product... Play Fi

I mentioned two, Bose and Heos. Plus Nuvo has a system now too.

I've used the Playfi stuff with Def Tech and I'm not a fan of it.

of course there is a limit, but find a plain receiver with 32 zones.
