I wanna be the user that buys this but guess they're going for new consumers to the Sonos family?!
yep. they are failing to realize most people with sonos products probably have multiple dots or google home devices already.
essentially they're adding
- airplay support
- hdmi
- voice
nothing revolutionary at all except you'll get to choose who provides your voice control (likely google & amazon & maybe siri later)

I think what he was saying is the only home theater setup that Sonos offers right now is through the playbar/playbase and specifically connected rear channels/sub. a connect amp only has two channels, and Sonos only supports 5.1 (though the aforementioned setup) with 3 of those channels built within the playbar/playbase. 7.1 isn't supported and atmos definitely isnt supported.
Oh, well, agreed. I misstated then if I said anything other than that.
Now, if you tell me that this new Playbar can do the front right, middle and left AND can be used with a receiver or other equipment. Now THAT might entice me to buy the new playbar.

Dolby Digital, which is the best Sonos can do at the moment with their playbar and surrounds (whether it be 2x Play1s or with the Connect:AMP
So you have a $400 Connect amp set up as surround and not another zone ? Where are your speakers located ?
Posted on 5/4/18 at 11:37 am to TigerWise
I have the Connect:AMP wired to my 4 in ceiling speakers. Cross wired or double wired or whatever you wanna call it.
2x reds to 1 red input and 2x blacks to 1 black input.
The Sonos app then lets you set the amp to play as the rears. 2 of my speakers are maybe 5 feet in front of the sofa (overheard of course) and the other 2 are maybe 5 feet behind the sofa.
The alternative (actually main) setup would be to use 2x play:1s as rears. I've tried this too but prefer the overhead sound than just the 2x rears.
ETA: Which leads to my hope that this new playbar will work with a receiver, in which case I could buy the new playbar and wire my in ceiling speakers to receiver and then maybe also use my 2x Play:1s as rears (or any speakers). Basically, if the new playbar would be capable of Sonos and receivers with HDMI In/Out and ARC, that'd be worthy of my purchase.

I know how Sonos works. Were the speakers that are in the ceiling in front of you part of a previous system ? Surround speakers should not be in front of you. Speaker placement is important.
Also for all the Sonos knights you spent more money on an amp for surround speakers than what it cost for a nice AVR with a second powered zone. That's crazy.

It's not going to. You should have just bought a passive sound bar for a fraction of the price. You could have even got one that doesn't left/center/right.

Yea, they were there when we bought our house. It is what it is and I'm not that loaded to spend the money to redo them. If it were my man-cave, sure, I'm all in. But it's our living room and for the last 2 years I've watched more Disney movies than anything that requires GREAT surround sound.

Yes, maybe. But I got mine for simplicity. My wife can easily control everything from her phone and whether I like it or not, she lives on the thing.
Nag free products are WELL worth their price, at least in my household.

only people who already have wired speakers they want to reuse.
quit generalizing.

TigerWise gets so defensive and angry when it comes to Sonos.

I like Sonos. It sells itself. I just don't think it's the best solution for most applications. Plus it's really expensive for what it is which makes it ironic the biggest cheapo here is it's top cheerleader. The minute somebody ask for audio advice here the thread is bombarded with
SONOS
O
N
O
S
before even knowing the scope of the application.

you still mad i've picked up almost my entire sonos system for pennies on the dollar on craiglist?
Posted on 5/4/18 at 2:30 pm to CAD703X
pissed I bought a play 1 yesterday on ebay for 95. Wouldn't have been available today...but that 15% off coupon would have been nice.

tigerwise keeps throwing around the 'expensive' term when he knows a little patience can get you whatever you want without paying close to retail.

So I have been waiting for a good deal on IFTTT for a sound bar. Should I plan on getting this new model or continue looking for a good deal on the old version?
This will be my first Sonos product and I don't have any other sound system components. The sound bar will go under my new TV (LG OLED-C7P) and I'll be adding speakers around the house/outside.

I would get a deal on the old one and put the saved money towards the sub.
The sub makes all the difference in the world.

Yeah, you got to have the sub.
Glad Sonos might be figuring out what Bose already knows, you need HDMI. Hopefully it's 4K.

I’ll sell you my old one once the new one is released ;)

SUB was the single best Sonos addition to my house.
