Someone help me with AT&T Next

Is this worth doing? I want to buy a 64GB Iphone 6... it doesn't look like I am eligible for a regular upgrade, just AT&T Next.
Anyone used this before? Seems like you are getting hosed, paying $30 a month for a phone over 18 months, when everyone else gets to sign a new contract and get the phone for $199.00.

you lease the phone. that's about the easiest way to say it.

Its supposed to quench those who need a new phone every year and have no self control... ATT makes a killing

the contract plans are cheaper on next plan
you were always paying full price for the phone pretty much, because they were including that subsidized cost into your plan costs
now you pay for the phone outright or in installments and you get a cheaper service plan
every situation is different, and some people may end up spending more depending on how often they upgrade and how many GB of data they purchase
i'm not 100% up to speed with NEXT, but with Verizon EDGE, the discounts on the plan are higher if you purchase 10GB of data or more
it's not a scam....it's just not going to benefit everyone the same
eta: the people most likely to benefit from these plans are the people who want to upgrade more often....or the people that don't care about upgrades and may use the same phone for 3 years
also, i don't think that individuals or even couples really benefit from these plans, unless they have phones that are paid off and opt for the cheaper service

AT&T Next
AT&T screwed me when they started this program. My wife and I are not on contracts; I have a nexus and she is eligible for an upgrade. However, if I buy her a new phone on contract pricing, I have to pay the contract price PLUS they will raise the cost of my monthly plan $25 (this isn't the next plan). So over two years, the S5 was going to cost me $800 plus tax. B/c of this, they tried to sell me on the Next plan which would be a few dollars less, but I think I'd still end up paying $600 for the phone.
Sorry AT&T. I'm not going to pay full price or more for your phones filled with bloatware.
tl;dr - AT&T will raise the price of my plan if get a phone through them and don't use the next plan.

Now they are, because AT&T structured them that way. But for customers like myself who have been on the old school unlimited plans for years, it's a scam. Or rather, people who pay to rent the phone for X amount of months and then trade it in for a new rental are.. not smart.

I did the math the other day.
For my family (3 iPhones), no shared data plan..plus the cost of the three phones on the 2-year plan, I pay about 5100 over the two years.
On the next play, with a 10 GB data plan and upgrading from my current phones (2 - iPhone 5, 16GB, 1 - iPhone 5c, 16 GB) on the next plan, over two years, I pay just under 5600.
For me, it isn't worth is unless I want to have a new phone every year.

What's the point of the NEXT plan when you can only upgrade every 18 months?

tl;dr version:
If your AT&T data plan is 10GB or greater, or you expect to keep your phone longer than 2 years, you save money with the installment plan rather than upgrading.
On the Mobile Share Value Plans, if you don't get the free upgrade and have over 10GB of data you get a $25 discount per line per month. Under 10GB the discount is $15 per month.
A $649 phone has an upgrade price of $199 + $40 activation fee. So $27.09 per month on an installment plan for 24 months vs $9.96 per month prorated upgrade cost over 24 months.
On a 10GB or greater data plan you lose your $25 discount by upgrading, so you're actually paying $25 + $9.96 or $34.96 per month to upgrade rather than paying just $27.09 per month on a 0% interest installment plan. The numbers aren't favorable for the smaller data plans though, $15 + $9.96 = $24.96. So if you have a smaller data plan you actually save a few dollars per month by upgrading. However you've just increased your plan rate $15 per month, so you start losing money if you keep your phone much longer than 2 years.

In my situation they're kind of giving me no choice. I'm on a small business plan and each line is $15/month. Well, when I'm going to renew my contract, they're going to bump that up to $40/month for my line, unless i go with ATT Next and the line will stay at $15/month, but they'll charge me $30/month for the phone. So my option is pay $200-300 now and an extra $25/month or just go with ATT next, put no money down and have my phone bill go up $5 more than when I would have put 200-300 down. So that's only $120 extra I'll be paying over the 24 month contract with no money down up front.
tl;dr going with ATT next will save me at least $80 over the life of the contract.

You choose 12 or 18 months. For me it would be the same or slightly cheaper per month than what I'm paying now, plu there is no activation fee or initial payment on the phone.

They have a 12 month upgrade eligibility option as well. On the $199/$649 models you go from $27 per month over 24 moths to $32 per month over 20 months.

Well, his is newer and he really likes it, but if I wanted to, I'll just stagger the upgrades where I'm not paying all three Next installments at once. There are a bunch of ways to do it and it work out better. I'm anal about shite like this and just want the best deal possible.

Now, I know you have to trade the phone in when you get a new one, but does this mean that ATT retains ownership of the phone while I use it?

It depends on when you trade it in. When your payments are finished you own your phone. If you keep it longer then your payments will go down. You could then sell it and start over if you like.

Does the phone have to be in perfect condition?

Not perfect, but "good physical and fully functional condition."
