Linux is used extensively as server software.
And by a limited number of geeks for personal computers.
There's probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 million desktop linux users worldwide, if you want to call that "limited".

It's about the same number of people who absolutely need to use Windows.
The other 90-whatever percent would be absolutely fine browsing the web and checking their email using Linux. It is exactly what "the masses" need to save them from themselves.

Ya'll can talk Linux up all you want. The simple fact is that it is not for the masses.
It's the easiest and most fluid OS to use. It is made for the masses, but most people hear that it's not because some douche that's never used it says it's too hard to use

Linux is the Ron Paul of operating systems.

Damn that's good.
Eta: even funnier when you realise Ubuntu or Fedora with a nice GUI is Rand.

If you are a software developer then it's a great OS to have. Certain distros like Ubuntu and Fedora don't have the same issues as a Windows when it comes to performance and stability.

So which of you uses it as their main os?
My laptop is dual booted with Ubuntu and Windows Vista.

ios was in this range not too long ago.
Steam OS is a Linux as well. If that catches on in the PC Master race world, it would do a lot to bolster more people giving it a try, or maybe it would be yet another great OS that people fail to see that it is actually Linux.
Is Chrome OS not some distro of Linux as well ?
Seems like LINUX is for the people that have specific use for it in mind.
If you choose a windows replacement distro it will work really really well for you for most computing needs since many apps seem to be hosted in the cloud these days.
Lets not fail to mention to anyone reading this thread that doesn't realize a important feature of Linux: The majority of Linux distros are FREE

All distros are free. Redhat charges for enterprise support, thats it.

I thought that Novell and SUSE version charged money? If not that is great news.

OSX is a fork of NextSTEP which came from the BSD kernel which preceded Linux.
Linux was a clean room UNIX and not a fork of any previous UNIX.

Similar to Redhat. There's the professionally supported SLES, and the free OpenSuse. And to answer the troll upthread, I use OpenSuse on my work desktop and work laptop, and on my home laptop.
