Software developing

I work for a consulting company, and we are potentially planning to create software in the future. I am looking for someone such as a student who would love the experience, and is interested in a way to get their foot in the door.

That's going to work out great

I can make my console say "Hello World!". Will that work?

Just a bit of advice - if this is to be a commercial product - you don't want a "student" doing the work.
If it's only going to be for internal use, that's more understandable.
Software naturally grows and expands exponentially. Once it's in use, you realize many changes and additions that you want to make to improve it and make it more useful.
If the base of your project isn't well thought out and designed, these changes and additions can be a nightmare to implement.
Just some things for you to think about.

yup
frick the OP and anyone who thinks like them
eta: friendly reminder that IT internships in the USA are 100% PAID. unpaid internships must be relegated to job shadowing and non-IT duties, like getting you coffee. if the intern does anything, even just a password reset, its PAID.

Potentially planning.. so not planning? You nailed it on the decision point as to which tense to do it in though.

For some reason this made me think of IBM.
I wonder if this dude has "find student to do all the work for us" on a card on a scrum board?

This likely won't work out well for either you or the student.

As someone that's been developing software for a really long time, I can honestly say you're either a really bad consultant or this isn't what you claim it is.

Wow I'm a longtime developer and the exec over it development for my company. This is a horrible horrible idea.
You are destined into having a spaghetti coded mess.
This is worse than a decision to outsource the job to India without clear and concise specifications on everything.

Agree with Catmann. Your asking for a disaster. First thing you need is a clear set of goals and objectives. Interns need to be mentored by Senior level developers. You don't have that so when they run into an issue they can't handle who will they ask for help?
Most developer interns get paid. We pay ours $25 an hour if we have them working on projects that that we sell.
There are several companies in the BR area who would contract this out for you. Development work isn't cheap so bring your checkbook. At the end of the day you want it done correctly the first time.

Great way to purge your client base.
I'd invest the 200-300 an hour to outsource it to a programming firm if you really want to do it.

outsourcing to India, but were affraid of low quality
I have had good luck with this when I have done it. I would say we hit about 90% but the cost savings alone makes it worth it.

If your business was building a new building, would you be looking for a contractor with no experience to get their foot in the door?
If your business or other businesses will be using your software, you want a professional developer with experience in whatever platform you are going to use. A student with no real world dev or project management experience would be a joke. You will also make whomever comes in after them to rewrite the code happy and mad at the same time. Happy because of the large pay check, mad because of all the fixing they will have to do. You will probably end up spending at least 3 times more to get a good product than you would by hiring an experienced software developer. Save yourself the trouble and money and do it right the first time around.
