Because I don’t feel like working at the moment and we all know the looks of the network setup also makes it run better

I know the metal are shielded (and cat7) and the white ones are cat6 but my house is wired with cat5a and cat6 (and 6e but that’s not a real standard). So it’s really just about looks because I don't think I’ll “need” shielded.

Top panel will feed rpi’s and if I need from the back of a Mac mini. Those types of keystone don’t come metal/shielded so those are likely to stay white. Then my unifi udmp, panel, 48 port switch feeding the panel above and below it. Then my NVRP will be under the 3rd panel.

So…silver or white…and while we are at it white or blue patch cables. My original game plan was white jacks and cables

My experience has been that the color does not mean anything in terms of the connection type (you can get any color they have in virtually any keystone for any CAT standard). For commercial installations, in particular, there may be local color standards related to specific usage but not CAT standard.

If it's in your house, maybe use keystone color/cable color to designate use? Or just match the room color

Oh yea I know the color doesn’t mean anything specific. This is strictly looks department this is just for my house and my little room under the stairs.

Going to cheese it up since it’s my domaine and not the wife. I’m going to see if I can make a a raspberry pi make the cloud blink if the internet is down and the lighting bolt blink if power is down for SnG

You have to go with the latest homelab fashion statement.. Ultra thin patch cords from your jacks to switches. I went with all black panels, going to go change my traditional style 6" with yellow or blue.

You aren’t using shielded cable. There is zero reason to use shielded keystone jacks. White. Personal I’d use blue because blue is data and white is phone in the old dual keystone system in wall plates.

I am shooting for the middle of the pack where I like it. Not the ultra thin but they are a little slimmer 28 awg. Can’t block the view of my blinky switch lights too much right.

Not it was strictly for the looks of it. I decided white, silver looked like I tried to match and failed

Thought about color coding but that pic I posted has been on the brain for a while so I stuck with white patch cables. One red for the ISP feed. Blue sfp+ dac to connect the udmp switch and nvr at 10gb.

Just installed my rsh sonos shelves. I have been wanting those for a very long time.

You should be whipped with CAT3 cable if you don't put the rest of the screws in! Lol

You need both?

I’m still sizing this thing up and trying to figure out/ decide on a few things. I will get all the same black ones except the unifi section will be their silver screws. Things may adjust slightly.

I have never built up and wired up a rack before, plenty other much simpler situations. Moved into my house in 14 and had a company do the one here now. Years of changing things around and doing it lazy half assed resulted in the all too familiar bowl of spaghetti. So while I have ideas of how I want things to go I don’t know the ins and outs of all the parts and equipment so I’m in a crash corse right now.

Thennnnn I get to figure out how to program everything

Do you have your rack in the middle of your living room?

Yea it has better airflow out here

Really tho it’s next to my room under the stairs where it will go. Currently there is a behemoth rack in it but it’s too tall and won’t slide back under the stair landing blocking off easy use of the rest of the space. This rack was one of the few 35u I could find that would fit. I couldn’t put the correct wheels on it because that made it too tall by a inch so I had to improvise with some rollers like off of a trundle bed 4 per side of the rack.

You see in the back left corner where this new one will slide in. The room wraps around all the way to the base of the stairs. House plans had it as a coat closet with a bunch of unused space behind it, so now it’s Mission Control.

Sonos amps. Streams my music and powers speakers throughout the house. I got my first one (white boxes in the tall rack) 10 year ago and haven’t looked back.
