Don't do that. You're better off just having a spare external or a spare drive to do a full nightly backup.
The rebuild time on a RAID5 array of that space wont be worth it to you.

Out of curiosity how complicated is repurposing an old laptop and configuring a new a media server onto it?
I am fairly competent getting around windows but don’t have much experience dealing with installing servers and/or performing a lot of other wholesale installs outside of regular programs. But I am at the point where this may be a necessary next step soon.

I have another thread on this board a few weeks ago where I explained how I repurposed an old laptop MacBook. Since then I found another old desktop from my office that I’ve repurposed. Both are running great. Put Linux on laptop for free and bought Windows 10 off eBay for desktop.

Windows 10. The laptop has a lot of crap loaded on it and plex buffers too much even over Ethernet. The cpu is pegging out most of the time when running plex.
Incidentally I have kodi installed on my shield and it seems to run much better via a windows share although it hangs up occasionally too. Just not as often as the plex server.

Fresh install - stripping out bloatware might be easiest/most familiar option...
If you're familiar with Linux, you could certainly wipe it and run it that way... just kinda depends on how much effort you want to put into it.

I know, I'm sorry. But it's not like I gave him implicit instructions on SSL-encrypted downloads at full internet bandwidth speeds or using NordVPN to encrypt your grabbing on the NZB from your search provider...

With Ubuntu you barely have to even know Linux to use it. It's a heavier distro, but still much better than windows

I used Ubuntu on the old Macbook that I repurposed and did a fresh install of Windows 10 on the old HP desktop that I found at work. Ubuntu seems to be running better and is way less clunky than Windows 10 on the old desktop. It wasn't that hard to do. Just do a little research online and watch a few YouTube videos.

FYI, U**net express is offering 2 years of unlimited bandwidth for $55 - believe it includes VPN access... Saw it referenced on slickdeals. Not sure if anyone cares/needs, but remembered it had been mentioned.
